Yesterday, we spoke of what forgiveness is not. Today, we look at 7 things forgiveness is:
  • A choice and an ongoing process. Every time those feelings of hurt rise up, you have to have to work through forgiveness again. You must chose to begin (or restart) the process.
  • Letting go of our perceived right to get even. In Romans 12:19 we read, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: It is mine to avenge; I will repay. says the Lord”
  • Moving forward. It hurts; I didn’t like it; but, I’m moving forward. Lack of forgiveness becomes an albatross. When you give forgiveness, your setting a prisoner free; you are the prisoner being freed. In Hebrews 12:1 we are commanded to throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. We cannot do that if we are unforgiving.
  • Dropping resentment and grudges. You’ve begun to forgive when the first thought you have about someone is no longer about the hurt and pain they caused.
  • A step towards healing. It takes time. It’s the beginning of a process.
  • An opportunity to display grace. When you forgive, you’re being an example of a humble Christ.
  • The removal of a roadblock. When you practice forgiveness, you eliminate three barriers:
    • Peace with ourselves. With an unforgiving heart, we can never truly be at peace.
    • Peach with others. Because we do not forgive, we harbor resentment and can never truly be at peace with others.
    • Our relationship with Jesus. Unforgiveness is a sin. Sin separates us from Jesus.
