22RF F-Class Competition / Rules and Feedback!!

On Saturday, Nov. 20th, we held a test run of our proposed 22RF F-Class event. The following rules and Course of Fire (COF) was used:

Open Class: ANY safe 22RF Rifle, unlimited scope magnification, any front rest, any rear rest, or bipod, shooting mats permitted, unlimited rifle weight -- fired from the prone position.

Each shooter has a dedicated target stand placed at 100yrds. On each shooter’s target stand, two targets are placed – a left target and a right target. The targets have a dedicated place at the top of the target to fire sighter rounds. Here is how it worked out for us:

A brief shooter’s meeting was conducted to explain the rules and answer any questions. Shooters were then allowed a 3 minute preparation period make any last minute adjustments to their rifle, rests, etc.

Course of Fire: The COF consisted of three strings of 20 rounds shot for a total of 60 rounds for record/score. Up to 5 sighter rounds could be fired for each of the 3 strings shot.

String #1: Shooter is permitted up to 5 sighter rounds at the beginning of each string. Shooters will fire 20 rounds for record/score within a 25 minute time limit which includes the firing of up to 5 sighter rounds. Shooter fires up to 5 sighters on the left target in the sighter area provided on the target and then fires 10 rounds onto the left target into the scoring rings for record/score. After the first 10 rounds for record/score is fired, the shooter then shifts his/her point of aim to the right target and fires another 10 rounds for record/score. After 25 minutes or conclusion of firing (which ever comes first), shooters make weapons and the firing line SAFE and move downrange and score targets. Shooters score the targets of the shooter to their right with the far right shooter scoring the far left shooter’s targets. After scoring, 2 fresh targets are put up for each shooter and shooters move back to the firing line.

String #2: Repeat of String #1

String #3: Repeat of String #1

(NOTE: The firing of sighter rounds at the start of each string is optional. Shooters may fire up to 5 sighter rounds per string but do not have to use any sighter rounds. However, once a shooter begins to fire for record/score onto a target, the shooter can not go back and fire any additional sighter rounds onto the target. There will be no sighter rounds fired onto the shooters right target.)

Using the above COF, a shooter would need 75 rounds of 22RF ammo (provided shooter uses all 5 sighter rounds per string. The minimum number of 22RF rounds required would be 60 rounds (provided shooter uses NO sighter rounds.)

Lessons learned: 1) 25 minutes per string may be too much time in that we finished each of the 3 relays far short of the 25 minute time limit; and, 2) no more than 10 shots should be fired for record onto a single target – more than 10 shots make the target very difficult to score.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are thinking of adding one or two additional Classes for those 22RF shooters who do not wish or can not invest in a target 22RF type rifle and wish to compete using what they have sitting around the house! This should be fun as well as interesting.

Sporter Class: ANY safe 22 RF Rifle limited to 7.5lbs with scope, scope magnification may be restricted to 9X, any front rest with rear bag, bipod -- fired from the prone position using the same Course of Fire (COF) as used in the Open Class. A different target may be used with larger scoring rings.

Traditional Class: ANY safe 22RF Rifle without scope magnification (iron sights only) with sling allowed. This Class will be shot at 100 yards on a different target with larger scoring rings. It has been suggested to use the same course of fire with firing positions to simulate the CMP High-Power competition.

Of course, all of the above is OPEN for discussion, modification, and further development!!

Also, we are also VERY interested in getting Junior Shooters involved in 22RF shooting and we are open to suggestions regarding a program best suited for them!!

Let us know what you think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

100 yards is too close. You should shoot this at 200 yards to get the real feel for wind gauging. I have done this 200 yard .22 rf shooting and it is a hoot when the wind gets up to 10 mph.

Sounds good. I see those Kimbers weigh 10.75 lbs. I'm buying one but would like to shoot in a less than anything goes competion. I'm just getting a run of the mill scope and that rifle. Don't want to be shooting against a $2k setup. And thanks for posting the rules Captain, clear and concise.

All the folks using the Kimbers are shooting "run of the mills scopes" -- most are using the $59-$69 BSA and I have a Simmons on mine .... don't need the high $scope! Just get something in the 20X to 32X range ... Tasco/BSA/Simmons, etc ...

I see that "low-class, severely limited" is not a class

Doug we can shoot 200 yards...but the main idea is to get folks started shooting 22's that otherwise might not do it...if we made 200 a "requirement" we might not get as much participation..

we trying to keep this laid back

i wanna try 100 with iron sights. prolly make a fool of myself but i wanna try it. and im dying to compete again with my ruger!!!!!
It's really not as hard as you think from a good position. 100 yards is far enough to be a challenge, yet not so far as to be impossible.

Re: 22RF F-Class Competition / Rules and Feedback!!

It all depends on the target getting shot at

100 yards iron on these targets is gonna be real tough....trust me

The purpose of all this is 3 fold

1. Cheap way to "simulate" our F-class shooting setup without breaking the bank

2. Find a way to get younger folks (juniors) interested in the shooting sports, including 4H participants who have no outdoor range....I have contacted the Hinds Cty 4H director and its in the works

3. Start a regular 22 rifle match, possibly supported by a local shooting club....

as far as #3 is concerned...if they do or they don't...don't matter to me...it will be run at my range as long as folks want to do it.

Since the targets are F class 600 yard targets that have been appropriately reduced for 100 yards I personally see no advantage to shooting a 200 yard target....

what we have now reduced down fits nicely on a 8.5x11 sheet of paper...

If we get a bunch of juniors participating, we can adapt and shoot 50 yard and 25 yard targets

It's cheap to get into: Not required...but a nice Kimber 82 and scope will cost right at $500...no $2000 Nightforces needed

dirt cheap....ammo...even the "expensive" wolf match extra at $6.50 a box is dirt cheap...60 rd match plus sighters cost you $10 to shoot a match...

a few of us wanted to do it...we had the place, an experienced match director ..and so we started something...

Things are still under development....

First match was a blast.

More coming...

Yes, the 1st 22RF F-Class match was a BLAST. Layed back (and quiet). You can put a $75 scope (BSA Platinum - 24X or 32X) on a stock Ruger 10/22 and find some ammo that Ruger likes and be in the running. No fancy rest needed.

Yes, the "better" guns & ammo help, but a LOT of it is experience (time behind the trigger)............ And yes, it is a MATCH. But an informal match with no prizes, and the winners don't brag. We shoot to have FUN in a match surrounding.

A few suggestions (from my ONE 22RF F-Class match experience).....

1. At least a 20X scope. Easy to see the hits and adjust POA.

2. A rest setup that is taller than you would use on a bench.

3. What ever gun you plan to shoot, find out what type(s) of ammo it likes best (shooting at 100yds, not 50yds).

4. If your gun has a heavy trigger, you must learn to control it.

5. Make or buy an ammo holder that holds 22s in groups of 10.

6. Have FUN and ..................... rag Neck............ :)

Glad ya'll are breaking ground on this. Guess it's a work in progress. Hadn't shot yet but I think after 2-3 shoots, everyone should have ironed out the rules.
Thanks for providing us a place to have it. Gave MSTrophy my money on a Kimber, chopping at the bit now.

Great post Captain. Just wanted to add that bipods are legal to use. I know most people have a bipod laying around and due to the no recoil of a 22 rf there is no disadvantage to using one.
