I would agree with 300 yds or there about. It can definitely do the job even farther out but things become more about luck (or truly exceptional marksmanship) beyond about that range.

Even at close distance it requires above average shot placement and a properly constructed bullet on big deer.

Farthest I have shot one with my 243 was ranged at 246 yards using a Federal Premium 85 grain BTHP. Deer dug in and jumped forward when hit and fell dead before he hit the ground. He didn't go 10 yards. All other deer were closer and neck shots and fell DRT. I'd venture to say that the 243 is capapble of killing deer farther than most are comfortable shooting.
