I am about to pick up a 03 Springfield that has been sporterized (I know, I know) to use next year as my deer rifle. I have been using a .308 for years, just thought I would try something different. What ammo do y'all use for hunting?
I used, and had good success with, Hornady custon 165gr BTSP. It is just about as cheap as you can find "quality" hunting ammo. In .243 this year, I used cheap Federal from WalMart. They performed well and I am sure there is .30-06 in that ammo line.
I'm just getting into the reloading thing. Right now, I'm going to concentrate on pistol rounds. I will probably reload rifle at a later date. Thanks for the info, though!
I should probably add that I would like to hunt hog too, so a round that would work well for deer and hogs would be ideal.
I've used a sporterized 03 for years and it shoots just about anything well. I personally use 165gn Barnes Triple shock now $$$, but used 165 gn nosler ballistic tips for years at longer ranges and used Nosler/Winchester fail safes for under 200 yards. I've always steered clear of rounds with the lead exposed on the tip for my hunting ammo because it invariably gets damaged loading and unloading the gun.
try out the noslar accubonds, good stuff.
I used to be a fan of the barnes but they leave more copper fouling in the bore than other brands, GREAT performance on game though.
I have used about all weights and have settled on Rem Core-Lokt 165 gr. That works for me, shoots a cloverleaf, and will work on deer just fine. But there are tons of choices, so whatever is in your budget and groups well should be achievable.
I've got a sporterized 03 too and it's eaten just about anything I've fed to it from a factory box. Lately I've been using the Remington Core-Lokt 165 gr. I'm going to work up a handload for the Barnes or similar soft tip later this year.
I am with Mr. Doug . I had a sporterized 03 also only difference was I used IMR 4350 with great results downed every hog and deer I shot with it. Super accurate. I also have used Rem 150 core-lok before I started reloading and they worked great.
most anything you shoot in a 1903-A3 is gonna be just fine at typical deer blasting range in MS
Federal Premium with Barnes TSX aint never let me down...don't sweat the copper...How many times you gonna pull the trigger during a typical hunting season...7 or 8 times max ?
That's what they make Montana Extreme cooper killa for
For deer I like the 150s. They will be faster, flatter and less recoil than the higher grain bullets, and 150 grain is plenty for deer...Just find the one that shoots the best in your gun...
