I'm going to start building a rifle and can't decide if I want a 300 win mag or ultra mag. What are the pros and cons? What kind of barrel life should I expect form them? can I use a magnum action for the ultra mag or do they make ultra mag actions?

just remember you gotta pay to play... if all your gonna do is 600 yard shot get a 308 which would give you 4000 rounds of enjoyment. 300 win mag would give you about 2000 rounds of long range accuracy before groups go bonkers.. i dont have much nice things to say about ultra mags.. they are called barrel burners for a reason = )

i have owned a little bit of everthing in the magnum chamberings over the years. Magnums are overrated in my opinion for deer hunting even out to 600 yards (before yall start throwing stones at me remember i shoot a 300win, well i did until my wife claimed it for her deer rifle- i do have to carry it for her b/c it too heavy).
Beladran's opinion is a good one, hard to beat 308 but with you saying you might hunt elk as well i would go slightly larger.
Of the two you mentioned 300 win mag all the way, have the barrel twist for 180 to 220 gr bullets and it will shoot lights out.
What action, stock, trigger combo you going with? Good choice on krieger its what i have on my customs and they are great barrels.

Remington action jewel trigger undecided on stock. Want somthing I can carry not a bench stock. Have the scope narrowed down to swaraski and nightforce. Don't know if nightforce will give me the low light gathering I want But nightforce has almost twice the adjustment the swaraskis do .I know it will be 56 mil objective.

Every deer I have shot with a 308 ran with perfect shot placement one deer took 3 shots in the chest . One deer I have shot with a 300 wsm ran and it went 20 yards. No deer I have shot with a win mag ran. On adverage I have had more deer drop or run a shorter distance with a 243 . I have friends who love there 308s and that's fine . I love my magnums personal preference. The short barrel life is turning me off from the ultra mag . Sorry if I Hurt any 308 fans feelings I just ain't a fan

i got my eye on a 1.250 straight krieger barrel for my little project. Prolly not the best for truckin through the woods with but if you got a 1.25 straight about 20-24 inchs that would make a nasty hunting rifle. Take a look at some robertson and stockade stocks.
would you need a 1:10 twist for a 210 berger?

if you do not already have the remington action- check out a surgeon action- for the cost of the base remington plus the cost of truing it you can just about buy a custom action. Also may want to look at Jim Borden's actions, little more $ but true works of art.
Now if you are a machinest or have a friend who is then remington trued will be the lower cost. Jewell will be best money you spend great triggers. I have a Mcmillian HTG and a Roberston composite they are both good stocks, robertson is less expensive and not as long a wait. The McMillian is freaking awsome. May want to check out manners stocks as well that may be what i put on my 7-08 when i have it re-worked.
I have not had any expirence with a swarvaski scope but do with Nightforce and it is very good in low light conditions. I have been able to compare it against a new german made Zeiss scope 56mm and i think my 12x42x56 Nightforce is brighter right at dark. It outperforms my zeiss binos, but they are about 10 years old.

Dont waste the money on going ultra mag. The price of that ammo is rediculous, and its burning a freaking 100 grains of powder per shot if you handload. Thats 1/3 more powder per shot for a little more velocity and energy that you dont need. You definetely dont need an ultra mag to shoot 600 or even a magnum. At that distance its all about shot placement, environmental factors and knowledge of wind and what your bullet does at that distance. A heavy recoiling rifle like an ultra mag actually makes long distance shooting more difficult. Dont fall into the trap of thinking that you can make a custom rifle, even a tackshooter, and then that translates into you being able to shoot a 600 yard shot on a deer out of a tree stand. What the rifle is capable of and what a person is able to do in a hunting situation are two different things.

I have and love both, first of all get at least a 26 inch barrel, 300 win mag has much more options for box bullets, not really much difference in price of box bullets, but the rum can be hard to find, I have to say I put my 300 win in the gun cabinet and only hunt with my rum now, love that gun. And if you are going out west and plan on shooting LONG range the 220 grain rum at the same velocity as 180 grain win mag is a big advantage

Just my opinion

Don't know what's deeper, the price of some of these rifles ya'll are talking about or the BS. I'd put money against about half some of these claims. Some of them are within reason so don't everybody jump. If it's 1" at 100 yds, yeah, I can go with that.
Tell me what you can group at 600 yds. out of a deer stand, we can talk then. No, I ain't gonna shoot against you, I ain't makin the claim. No ringers, just you, a 300 mag, 600 yards, a deer stand and the group you claim (if it's do able, I'll tell you ahead of time and give you your due). I like a good bet and if you can do it, my hat's and my money's off to you.

I haven't seen anyone make claims, he just said there is a possibility of a shot at 600 and someone else said he hit a deer at 500, there were no grouping claims or anything that I seen.
Yeah I know Buck, just seeing who wants to group one, football's over, what else is there to bet on? Just a friendly bet, no one walks home or anything like that. Shake hands win or lose and I don't gloat, matter of fact I won't even say if I won or lost unless the shooter wanted to. I couldn't shoot like that with any rig you gave me.
