I have tried 308 in mine with no adverse effects, so far. I have read the forums stating that 308 pressures are too high for the ishapore and have also read posts that say it is no problem as long as you are not pushing the velocity limits of a 308. Would really like to shoot 308 as that is what I have available. What have you guys seen? What have you heard? What do you think? I will not hold your opinion as gospel as I know a lot depends on the condition of the gun in question. I just want to know what, if anything, have the members seen or experienced.

Do not shoot .308 Winchester ammo in an Ishapore No 2 or 2A rifle. Continued use will increase headspace and eventually cause headspace separation. Try to find a place to order 7.62 NATO Ball ammo and use it or reload with lighter loads.. I have personally seen the increase in headspace in several rifles.

Thank you Doug. It sounds like the steel is soft enough that the higer pressure "stretches" the lugs, is that the way you see it? I just don't see lots of 7.62 readily available, at least what seems to be non-corrosive, at a reasonable price. I do handload, but don't cast or I would shoot cast bullets for plinking. Would it be more feasible to trade my Ishapore for a mosin and then get the 7.62R that seems to be everywhere?
