I have a .35 whelen in a CVA scout, but I have yet to shot it. I bought it for my Father-in-law. I have heard good things about them, and the price is right.

Then you have the handi rifle. You can find them in the 35 also.

I shoot a TC encore. If you have the money it is the way to go.

That is the 3 that I know of.

I have heard second hand that a troubling amount of encores and a few nefs have had to go back for stronger hammer springs and different firing pins. Something about the very small shoulder causing a headspace issue. I'd ask around gun stores about returns.

i have heard that 95% of these issues have come from Hornady ammo and that it isnt the guns. Had a guy tell me his Hornady's were crap in his 35 whelen but Remington Core-loks have been flawless

Thanks for clearing that up. I've been wanting something in 35 Whelan too. If it's off a .30-06 case it has to be good, right?

I just ordered a new T/C Encore Pro Hunter with a 24" Bergara barrel with 1:14 RH twist. I needed a gun that I could hunt during muzzle loading season and the Pro Hunter seemed to have the best reviews. I'm supposed to get it tomorrow. Give me a week or so and I will see if it was worth the price. The research I did led me to believe the T/C was a better buy for about the same price.

Good Luck Finding Any Apex Pieces and Parts

Hi everyone...just joined and this is my first post...

I know this thread was specifically created to ask about the 35 Whelen, but folks there is a glaring lack of availability of ANY CVA Apex pieces and parts, including the Apex 35 Whelen SS Bergara barrel. I have looked all over the Net, and there just aren't any out there and haven't been for a long, long time. CVA won't respond to my emails, and the retailers say they haven't been getting any CVA products in with any regularity. I have serious concerns about the viability of CVA, and the Apex rifle specifically, if they can't seem to produce any!

I lucked out several months back and now own the .45-70, .270, and 300 Win Mag Apex barrels, a black composite frame, and a couple of black forearms because of the taper difference in the barrels. The accuracy of the barrels is excellent...all three shoot in the same hole at 100 yards. I would like to get the 35 Whelen (just for the heck of it), and the .243 (for my daughter to shoot), and maybe even a second frame, but have had no luck finding them, irrespective of some of the outrageous prices you see them listed for on the Internet, because they are always out of stock.

Is anyone finding the Apex barrels and frames anywhere?

I just bought the cva scout 35 wheelen and it will not fire. It's as if the firing pin isn't working properly or isn't strong enough to fire the round. I've tried several different rounds all having the same problem.
Looks like you are new here. Maybe you found this old thread because you were searching the internet for a solution to your problem. Can I assume you are also relatively new to firearms? The first thing to do in with your CVA is to examine the rounds you tried to fire and see if there is any mark at all on the primer. No mark (or an insufficient dimple) tells you that you have a firing pin problem. Assuming that is the case, start working backwards. Make sure the firing pin channel is clean and the mechanicals of the pin/hammer are properly cleaned and lubed. If the hammer has any kind of external attachment (like a hammer extension to make it easier to use with a scope) remove it (those are notorious for causing misfires because they slow down hammer travel).

If all that doesn't solve the problem, then you likely have a headspace issue. Headspacing on a Whelen can be tough because they have such small shoulders. A break-open rifle exacerbates this issue. If the factory cut the chamber just a hair too deep, it could be enough to not allow good primer strikes. If that is the case, then you only have 2 choices. First is to have the barrel replaced (I don't think setting chamber back is an option on a break-open the way it is on a bolt-action). Second is to use only reloads where the brass has been allowed to stretch without full-length resizing.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your Whelen.

Mine kicked like a mule and needed a better trigger. Had problems with the scope mount provided, had to sand down the flats so it would grip better. Gun had potential to be a good shooter for someone with the knowledge and patience and younger shoulder than myself.
I just got to where I hated pulling the trigger on it

I have a handi in 35 Remington and one in 35 Whelen and had no issues with Remington or Winchester factory. I primarily shoot my own loads and have no trouble at all. As far as triggers, the one on my Whelen is just awful but it gets it done every time.
