May also want to look at some of the monolithic bullets. You have high weight retention leading to good penetration and still get lighter weight and expansion, or in some cases like the Lehigh defense and ARX type bullets you get good wound channels from hydraulic displacement.
I like the xtp. Was going to suggest hard cast lswc but since you are shooting out of a rifle you might actually get some expansion with the hollow points.
I posted earlier tonight about deer hunting with a 30/30 and Henry Rifles, I have a Henry Big Boy in 357 magnum and I am going to try to kill a deer with it this season, it will be a 50/75 yard shot, I have worked up some loads using Hornady 158gr XTP bullets with WInchester 296 powder.
I Have been shooting deer with Hornady Custom 200 grain and 220 grain xtps in my H&R 44 MAG.
VR1967, where did your wife hit the big buck with a Rossi shooting 38s. How far did he travel after being hit. That is an accomplishment.
I am thinking about shooting some Buffalo ammo in my 10mm.
I shot a buck with Rem umc 180 grain ammo with 44 mag. It was smoking fast.
I've used SJHP 357's on 2 deer. Killed both at 50 yards or so. The bullets came apart completely. If I hunt with it again, I'll load up some 158gr JSP. I've killed a couple dogs with them, and they stayed together, exited and I found them in the ground, still intact.
