ok i had a chance to blow some ammo today at my dads place. My ammo was 147g HG swc with hardball alloy and lee 158gr flatnose straigh WW's.. The HG bullets was lubed with magma blue lube and one group was jakes Moly.. Lee bullet was lubed with alox.. all sized to 358. Powder for all was 4.0gr of N350. Shots were fired at 30 yards free hand slow fire. N350 is not gonna cut it for 38spl. In my 45acp and 44mag it was great. But in the 38 im not getting complete burn. I bet i am leaving atleast a grain of powder in the barrel after each shot. I am using fed small pistol primers and my barrel is 5.5inchs. Looks like its back to trusty old bullseye or 231.. any how its picture time!

6shots with HG hardball bullet with magma lube

6shots with the lee flatnose with alox

12 shots with hg hardball with jakes moly...(forgot to take pic after first six, also pulled a couple off the target = (....)

30 YARDS off-hand....... Well step on with your bada$$ self...... :)

NICE shooting ! ! !

Did you try any of the plated bullets?

I bet your H&G bullets will cut a super clean hole in NRA type paper targets.....

Show us a picture of your NRA Action Pistol revolver. I saw that beauty, but others need to drool too...................

Because the equipment (multiple plate racks, barricades, walls and mover cables) would not last a WEEK at Magnolia...... :(

Sad to say...... but Magnolia still has too many DIP$HITS in the membership. Or MORONS that might jump the fence and screw things up...............................................

:(

You were nearly a grain and a half under the start load recommended by Vihtavuori for N350, so that is most likely the reason for the incomplete burn. For a 145 gr SWC, they recommend starting at 5.4 grains of N350 with a max of 6.4. For a 160 gr. FN, they also recommend starting at 5.4 grains of N350 with a max of 6.1. Load data is available here: http://www.lapua.com/en/products/reloading/vihtavuori-reloading-data/relodata/6/28

The only .38 Special start load for N350 under 5.2 grains listed is for 148 gr. LWC's loaded down into the case (1.181 OAL). Even they have a starting load of 4.1 grains of N350. Loading 4.0 grains and the longer OAL, I don't think you were creating the pressure necessary to get the clean burn VV is known for.

If you want to stay with VV and are looking for light target loads, try some N320. I like it better than N350 in .45 ACP too, although N310 is actually my favorite VV .45 powder.

I have tried using magnum primers in .38 spl to help get complete powder burn in the large case. There was lots of discussion during the last primer shortage..You might want to try it with a 100 rounds and see what you think. They work fine for SWC loads..I do not use them in WC loadings..
