Anyone ever used bullets with no crimp groove in a lever action rifle? I have 100 of these bullets i want to use up but wonder if they will ride in a mag tube without issue. I am familiar with neck tension in a revolver but is that enough in a levergun?

Worst case I can just use these in my Ruger #1.

Not sure if they would stay in place in a levergun or not. Somewhere in a box I’ve got a tool that will roll a cannelure in a jacketed bullet. If you want to borrow it I’ll dig it out.

With the bullet seated where you want it, you can use either a tamper crimp die or a sizing die. A sizing die will require a more precise adjustment. Put the loaded round in shell holder and run the ram all the way up. Screw the sizing die down until it bottoms out on loaded round. Lower the loaded round and screw in the sizing die down about 1/4 turn. Run the loaded round into the die and see if you get the results your looking for. Adjust as necessary. Of course, the decapping stem much be removed before you start.

Voice of experience here: If you size your cases correctly, their I.D. should be slightly less than the bullet's O.D. After you bell your cases and seat the bullet, you should notice that the bullet very slightly bulges the case. This slight bulge and the neck's tension should easily hold the bullet firmly in the case, even in a tubular magazine and under recoil forces. I have loaded thousands of .44 Mag lead and jacketed bullets, both for rifle and revolver use.

So that’s a no. Ha

these bullets are sized like jacketed, (.429), so apparently some brass is too large to hold the bullets good enough. Some just barely fit with barely any neck tension. I guess I could sort by headstamp and only use brass with adequate neck tension but I think I’ll pass on that. I am just gonna save these for my #1, and I’ll use my bullets with crimp groove for the Marlin.
