If a fella wanted to put a scope on a 45-70 Handi-Rifle what would be a good option? I was thinking a fixed 4 power, or maybe up to variable 5. Of course, I am worried about eye relief LOL!

    I used a 4x on my 45-70 Handi Rifle.

I had a Redfield 2-7 power on mine and it did great. Have since sold it though.

I have the Redfield 2 x 7 (accu range reticule) on mine and I like it.

Something in the 1-4 or 5 ought to do well particularly with
    the eye relief issue.

I'd probably prefer a low-range in the 1x4 or 5 area, but the 2x7 is a good compromise and is more readily available and usually cheaper.

I would go with the Variable power red dots.

With my eyes I've always preferred higher magnification. The reduced field of view doesn't bother me. I spot them on low power and turn it up to shoot. I'll shoot one moving at a slow walk but I'm not good enough to take a shot at one running. I do have a 4x on my Winchester .44 though and have put enough rounds through it to be comfortable.

When I owned a .45-70 Handi, I never had it scoped.
I currently have 2 single-shot .44 Mag rifles. One wears a 3-9x40, and the other a 4-12x50. Overkill, I know, but I've never turned either one up past 4X.

Never owned a Handi so I don't know about scopes for one. But I have a Burris 2-7 LER Scout scope on my Marlin Guide Gun. I used QD rings so I can quickly remove it if I need to use the iron sights.

Get you some dies & trailboss when you order the scope. Takes the worry out of cuts & black eyes with a 5 lb rifle in 45/70.;)

I'd start with 1.5x or 2x for where I hunt. I have a 1.5-5x32 I have been saying I going to put on my 45-70. If it was a "go to" rifle or all I'd be hunting with the I'd likely do a 2-8x32
