Never shot that ammo, but tried a bonded lead 110 grain and wasn't real pleased with it. Prefer Hornady 120 grain SST for deer.
Not any help, but i shoot 90 gr tnt at everything I don't eat and I have 95gr ttsx for what i plan on eating.
I bought a few boxes of the XM68GD from academy when it was cheap (and available) and it ran well, did some googling and it’s effective on game. I wish I’d bought quite a bit of the stuff when it was available, now when I look for it it’s wither backordered or $1 a round, when I bought mine it was about $0.50 a round.
I have been hunting with Federal Fusion 115 grain and can get good groupings at 100 yards. This 90 grain is hitting all over the place. I spoke with another guy that shoots these 90 grains well in his rifle which has 1:10 twist. My rifle is 1:11 twist. Could that be the issue?
My rifle is 1-11.25 twist, I’ll see if I have a few rounds and try to print a group this week and see how it prints, I only shot steel before.
I’m pretty sure this was XM68GD, from what I remember it was the only ammo I bought that the box wouldn’t be closed back up other than the SSA poly tip stuff I got. 16” ARPerformance barrel, first round (not pictured) was cold bore, 5 shot group was then fired. Target was 60 yards, cartridge in the picture is 556 for size. I’m pretty sure it’s an accurate round in my rifle, I’m just not a real accurate shooter, especially with a MilSpec trigger that’s gritty and had a long pull compared to my savage accutrigger. I then shot this 4 round group (including cold bore shot) with the Savage model 10 at the same yardage. As you can tell I’m a mediocre shot at best.
6.8 is the 5 holes in the top picture, .308 is the 4 holes that are towards the right in the bottom picture, the .308 holes almost make a little square, the 6.8 is more like a string up and right, however I did get 2 rounds almost touching on the 6.8 (lower left holes in the top picture)
The 90gr Gold Dot has mixed impressions.. Alot of guys didnt have good luck with it on hogs. But on deer it worked great.. I bought a ton of the pulled bullets awhile back but havent shot many of them. They were designed by ATK/Federal for the LWRC 6.8 PDW for the Jordanian and saudi secret service folks. it was a joint effort between LWRC, Magpul, and Federal for the whole package. Here is some bullet performance results 6.8 SPC Bullet Performance - Page 20 Deer Carnage Pics from the 90Gr Gold Dot Deer Kills w/ XM68GD 90gr Gold Dot
I have deer hunted with it for the past 4 years and killed 3 deer using the Federal Fusion. I wanted to see what this round would do to a deer, but looks like I may stick with the Fusion.
Looks like your are grouping them tighter than mine. I will try playing around with them some more before I hunt with them. Thanks for the pics!
Grand kids have had extremely good luck with this ammo. I purchased a several hundred rounds at 50 cents per round. Wish I had got several thousand.
Ive been shooting 120gr SST on hogs for years. It frags and tears them up bad. Ill have to give the 90gr Gold Dots a try again to see how they do on deer.. The best bullet ive used in the 6.8 is these. They arent cheap but they are horrific on hogs and deer. Cavity Back MKZ 105 grain 6.8/.277 - VIEW ORDER PAGE
Any commercial ammo being loaded with the MKZ, would like to try the 120 gr.? Reviews on it are very good.
They are working on it now. Ill look on the 68 forum. He was trying to get someone to load them hotter than SAAMI specs and not everyone wanted to do that.
