Me not shooting the mag neck, my '06 can dispatch anything on this planet. I think he was just punching holes and not happy with not much expansion. Personally I like .308 diameter holes!! Thanks for your input, he was just thinking aloud and I told him I would ask you guys. Mac

Most of the 175 gr. bullets are made for tough critters that need deep penetrationheavy construction..... A deer is nothing special.. Go down on bullet weight from 140 to 160 grs. with a bullet like the Accubond, SST, or Interbond, and you will have huge holes...Side note... The Sierra GameKings NEVER give an exit wound... D-451

I've never had a problem with the SGK. I had a huge exit wound on a 7pt at 200 yards last year. In my mind the in hornady SST's and such should do a good job but it really depends on how much meat/shoulder you hit on the way in and how the deer is standing. It is hard to compare bullets and exit wounds without really looking in the chest cavity and see how it has done.

I've got several pic's of chest cavities after 162 sst damage, but photobucket thinks that they are to vulger so I can't post them. I have killed deer from 40 to 413 with them and have yet to not get and exit wound. If I wasn't using them, I would do like d451 says and would use a tougher 140gr bullet like a Partition or a Barnes which can be bought in Federal ammo.

A lot of high-vel stuff like 7 mag doesn't do well at short range. Problem is, different folks have different definitions of "short range". The shortest range I've ever killed a deer at w/ my 7 mag is 150 yds. Most have been at 200-250 yards. Most folks I know consider 200 yards to be a "long" shot. I don't. My definition of "long" is over 300 yards, and I'm sure others' definitions may include those that say 400 yards and longer.

Nothing wrong with downloading for a known situation/known range that's relatively short and you know it will always be that way (like from your favorite/only stand).

You can load a 7 mag down to 7mm-08 levels. You canNOT load a 7mm-08 up to 7 mag levels.

For the record, from my favorite stand, my shots range from 125 yds. to 325 yds. My usual factory ammo to cover that range spread is Hornady 139 gr. pointed soft point. Not their "light magnum" or anything, just their standard 139 gr. PSP full power 7 mag. load.

I've never had one run off (out of 8 shot) and I always aim for the shoulder. Cut the hide back and it looks just like you drilled the shoulder blade with a 9/32" drill bit.

:D
