I have been thinking of buying a new bolt action hunting rifle. If I do, I think I am going to get a Browning Medallion. I am just not sure if I want the X- or the A- bolt. I am sure they are both great rifles, but I just havent handled an A-bolt very much.

As far as the X-bolt goes, I like the detachable box mag, but I really am not crazy about the fact that it is plastic. I guess that don’t matter too much. AR mags are plastic, but…

Other than that I love the fit and finish of the rifle. Oh and in stainless and wood! AHHHH!!!

So, my question is, does anyone out there have both, and can offer comparisons?

Not sure what is available, but the calibers I am tossing around are 300 WSM, 270 WSM, 7mm-08.

But they do make a nice single shot… but then there are a couple marlins left I want to get…

Hmmm...

Thought the X-bolt was a fairly new development for Browning...

I aint a big Browning rifle fan....Savages and Remingtons for me...For hunting around here, My pick would probably be an A bolt in 7mm-08

I aint drinking the short mag cool aid....

Oh really? Thought they were hinged floor plates. Thanks.

Neck, why not short mag? I like the remingtons and savages too and may consider the savage classic with wood stock and accutrigger or the remington 700 cdl but I just really dig that medallion. Since aftermarket options aren't a concern for me in what I'm wanting it for, I don't think I'd do bad with the browning.

I duuno what I will do yet. May still end up with another levergun or single shot. I like that ruger #1 and the browning version.

They do have a hinged floor plate to cover the magazine. I been think about getting a bolt gun in .233 or .243 the A-Bolt is one I am considering along with the Rem 700 and Savage. They are all good guns so it's hard to decide.

Joe S. I just happen to think that in general terms, the Browning name is way over rated...

now if it were an old sweet 16 shotgun I might change my mind...

its personal preference...just like Ford Chevy Dodge...

Medallions don't do anything for me

I'm strongly considering ditching the Handi and am thinking about a Ruger #1 myself in 45/70

If single shot turns you on, you'll love a Ruger #1...if you can find one in caliber you want....They aint cheap

My whole family hunts with Browning Rifles, a few BARS but mostly A Bolts. 300 WSM, 300 Win Mag, 7 Rem Mag, 270 Win

Everyone of the A Bolts shoot just under MOA with premium factory ammo.

The BARS shoot right over an inch with premium factory ammo.

This is our experience with a half dozen rifles...

I like the additional features of the X Bolt, the adj trigger especially.

I also REALLY like Savage for a factory rifle...

That a wood stock?
They offer the SF (stainless fluted barrel) on wood and black stocked rifles. I like the plain old CDL better.
