Depends on who made the barrel. Some manufacturers used straight pins and some used tapered. If tapered drive them out left to right. Blocking the barrel and sight post will make it easier and prevent the sight post from walking around the barrel. Its not hard at all.

Or just take it to an armorer.

DPMS should be straight pins (non tapered) and come out either way but I still remove them left to right as looking down the barrel. As long as the post is blocked there should not be substantial scaring. only where the pins were. Trick is lining up the new gas block. thats more critical than removing the post.

Check out AR15.com they have a section set up that shows you how to do it, also Brownells has videos on their website that shows how too.
