Simply use Google Earth. Use the measuring tool and set the selection to measure the perimeter in yards and the area in acres. It isn't as accurate as a surveyor but close enough for most of us. For the track to a deer, you there are some GPS programs but most rely on getting a good phone signal. In the woods I hunt, you can't get crap for a signal. Therefore, I keep a handheld GPS unit in my backpack.
Acreage measuring app tool thing?
I am not a very “techy” person so forgive my potentially ignorant question!!!!
Is there an app (iPhone) that will measure the size of a field? I want to hit a start button and walk the perimeter of a food plot and hit “finish” and it tell me the true acreage of what I just walked off. HuntStand has a feature where you can “draw” it off but I want to walk it.
While I’m asking….
Is there something that if you need to track a wounded deer, you could hit a start point and when you are ready to get back to your truck just turn around and follow the line you just came in on by way of the phone ??

I use OnX. I think it’s $30/yr but it shows property lines, topo and landowner information which is handy. It has a tracking tool so you can start a track and it will keep up with everywhere you have covered. Nice when tracking to be able to visually see areas covered on a map. As far as the acreage tool you should be able to make a track and then overlay with the acreage calculator. I use the app often, well worth the money in my opinion.

You aren't likely to get any higher degree of accuracy using your phone GPS to walk the perimeter than you are to just draw it out on an app.
HuntStand has a track feature too. It will lay a line down to follow.

We actually have a test course for GPS units under canopy and in open. Many companies send us units to test. We test some phones and have gotten into testing more tablets now as well as standard GPS units. Phones typically suck especially iPhones (+/- 8~10 meters. Some Android devices are better at 3-5meters some are about like iPhone accuracy. I will say be careful of property line info on all apps as they come from the tax office, which is known for their maps to be inaccurate. You can look at the arial image and often see property lines and the tax map over lay is off by 8-10meters as well. Digitizing from an arial photo or satellite imagery will be pretty close. Just use the “property lines” in apps or courthouse as a reference but not exact.
