I am looking to update my 9mm. The one I have is one my dad gave me a few years ago. Taurus 92C. Shoots great, but heavy as a brick. I have been doing alot of reading and drooling for a month. I am not looking to spend a ton for one of the higher price guns for my needs. I have narrowed it down to a few.

Kel-Tec P9 / P11
Taurus Slim
Ruger SR9C
M&P 9
and a few others. Your advice, and experence would be appreciated

Paul

Also, I hate to get flamed on the first post, but best to get it over with. I bought a Jimenez 380 a few weeks back. The KT, and LCP just felt like nothing in my hands. Reviews are either A+ or F- not much in between. I did a fluff and buff on this one and have had great results. The first thing I fed it was JHP's and later found out it should not like these. I had no problems though. Okay, light the fires.

If you have average or above average size hands the slim guns probably wont fit well. I wear a large glove size and the pf9 i had wasnt pleasant at all to fire due to the grip size. I have a m&p compact 40 now and its much more pleasant to fire than the pf9 was. The changeable palm swell grips on the m&p made a huge difference to me.
The sr9c btw is a ruger not a taurus, they have a very nice trigger from the factory, better than the m&p. I havent fired the sr9c, just dry fired one at a gun shop. If they release a .40 version of the sr compacts i will most likely buy one.

 Well, since I'm among the first ones in here, I'll leave the flaming to whoever comes along next. I have really enjoyed the LCP. It carries very well in my particular situation and has performed flawlessly.

On to the question at hand... My wife carries the Taurus 709 Slim and it has worked well for her. We have had no issues with it and it shoots very well. I've been considering buying another. Some like them, some don't. That just goes with the territory. The SR9c that you mention is Ruger instead of Taurus and I've shot the full size but not the compact. The triggers usually aren't all that nice out of the box IMO but a little polishing helps them a lot. My favorite is the Walther PPS but that may be a little out of your price range. The M&P is an excellent gun as well and I'm sure someone is going to chime in shortly that a Glock is by far your best choice, but I am not of that school. The most important part of this is to see if you can get your hands on some of them and shoot them before you purchase. You already know, I'm sure, that what feels good to you is more important than anyone else's opinion. There may be some folks getting together to shoot who would let you try some out and if you can, that's the way to go.

Thanks guys. I did fix my typo in the first post. Yes, I agree, big difference between dry firing them in the store, and actually shooting one. I will most likely be shooting a little on the weekends, and riding it around the rest of the time.

I would like to find a group that is shooting, and try out a few other ones before I drop the coin. One of my older boys is coming at Christmas and bringing his millenium for me to try.

I have the Taurus Slim, and I like it for what it's intended to do. The trigger takes some getting used to, and my sights were way off from the factory. But I have been pleased with it, and it carries well. The price was also right for my budget at the time.

I have no experience with the Ruger SR9 series.

A buddy of mine has the service model M&P9 and with the shooting I have done with it, I like it. To me the M&P pistols are simply Glocks with updated ergonomics and some more refined lines. M&P's point more naturally for me and just feel better in my hand. On the same token though, I really like Glocks.

The XD(M) pistols are also worth a look. I have enjoyed shooting the one that belongs to a friend. Same as the M&P really, points naturally has a reasonable trigger and had a good set of sights.

Really it's going to depend on:

A) What do you plan to use it for? If this is a plinking gun or home defense gun, then I don't recommend the taurus for that role at all. Same goes for the Keltec. They aren't target pistols, and don't qualify to me as "fun" guns to shoot. I see mine as a tool to fill a certain role, and it fills that roll well. Something with a good mag capacity, and a full frame would be more desirable for a home defense or target/leisure gun.

B) What do you value in a gun? Are you picky about grip? do you like a specific trigger weight? Action type? How high do you value aesthetics over function? Sight type? Etc etc..

The answers to those types of questions will narrow your field quite a bit.

I had a 92c from a trade. Wasn't anything compact about it but the grip. It held 13 instead of 15, the slide was the same size as my Beretta 92. I sold it and got a Smith 66 but if you want an auto, go with the Glock 19 as has been suggested.

I 've got a Keltec pf9, Glock 26 and Glock 19. I like all of them. What are You going for ccw or range shooting, if Your going for ccw I would go with the Glock 26 or Keltec pf9. If You are going for range shooting Glock 19 or Glock 17. You did not mention price range. New Glocks in the $500 range, new Keltec pf9 in the $300 range. :2c:

This is just me, but if I wanted a Glock, I'd wait and save up to get one. I've shot and owned several semi auto 9's, XD, Sig, Glock, Ruger, Walther, and they are all equal in quality in my book. It just depends on what fits you and what you shoot best.

Another thought, you may be able to find someone who'd do some swapping for one of your fine knives.

Ok I'll chime.
1. Glock 26 or 19 (19 best choice)
2. XDm9 3.8
3. XD compact or service
4. M&P9 either size
5. Ruger SR9 or 9c
All the above have plenty of followers and perform comparable to each other. Test run many and buy what fits YOU.

+1 to this.

I'll add a P250 to the list. Might be more in your price range and still be a great weapon that gets the job done every time. Note that the P250 is double action only though, not everyone is a fan.

/shameless plug: If you are interested in SIGs and want to learn more about their offerings you should check out my site www.sigtalk.net, the guys there could certainly answer all of your questions.
