This is probably a stupid question, but if ya don't ask.... What is the difference between the AK47 and the AK74?

Not stupid at all. The AK47 shoots 7.62x39 whereas the AK74 shoots 5.45x39 ammo.

Did you actually see that stamped on a gun or just an advertisement/listing/etc? There should not be an AK74 chambered in 7.62x39. Could it have been a misprint?

Well, I see SAIGA has some listed like that but I have no idea as to why. That is supposed to be the differentiation, the caliber.

Yeah, I've seen them on gunsamerica and impactguns. Maybe they are chambering them in 7.62x39 because its such a popular round. But to me that would make it a AK47. LOL

They're hard to beat. Even a good SKS is a good gun to have. I think everyone's stable should include some form of the 7.62x39. Good hunting! :thumbup:

A Kalashnikov variant in x39 is either an AK47 knockoff or an AKM knockoff, it can't be an AK74. Don't care what somebody says on the internet, lol.

Like saying "This is my AR15 chambered in x51", just ain't so.

I'm going with the real AK47. Found a romainian for 425.00 but not sure if that's a good price or not.

To change a 74 to 47 couldn't you just change the barrel? Mags are the same as well as everything else right.

These parts are different bolt, bolt carrier, barrel, stock (lightening grooves on the original also served as visual differentiation so the soldier would not grab ammunition for the wrong rifle), muzzle break (although there are now AK74-type brakes for the AK 47 caliber) and magazines - not the same. Some receivers are interchangeable, as some mfgs. advertise receiver flats that can be mfg. into either.
