This is the best site I've been allowed to be in. Ask anything about anything , except oatmeal cookie recipes,
including guns! No naked pics, nasty jokes, just a great site.
I've recently come across a trove of guns from a relative that I know nothing about, including a S&W 38 pistol, that needs some loving. I'll have pics up, but meanwhile, it's chrome or nickle, and its flaking off in places. What can be done to replace or refinish on a common person ( cheap) budget?

There are home nickel plating kits out there that are pretty reasonable and work well!!!

Nothing you can do now to save the existing finish. When I was still in the rebluing business, I've stripped them and reblued them. There is a electoless nickel finish, but needed a special tank for it, and it wasn't profitable for a few guns over 20 years. After the finish is gone, nickeled guns can't reliably be parkerized. (Nickel is harder than steel) So I think you're gonna' be left with a spray on or a dip finish like poly-vinyl alcohol.
The only low-cost option I know of, is to reblue it, provided it is absolutely stripped of all nickel everywhere off the gun. A plastic window box for flowers and such will work for a rinse tank.

What? Not worth it or you don't care for S&W?

I don't do bluing but I could put you a nice ceracote finish on it! I could also check around and see if I could get you a good deal on re nickeling it.

Is it practical to have it stripped? and is it something that can be done locally?

I'd just as soon like a cerakote. Nickel ain't my thing.

I love the the old S&W's, I just meant it could be costly. I know we save change and it adds up fast. :)
