Another Hi Power / P35

I specifically avoided calling this a Browning Hi Power, because it's not. This is my second (recent) Charles Daly Hi Power and it's in near mint condition. This one followed me home from the Pascagoula Gun Show on Sunday.

Much like 1911s, Hi Powers have been produced around the world and across many, many decades. I've owned many variations. I always especially liked the Charles Daly versions, though sadly they've been out of production for many years. The CDs were made with Hungarian FEG parts which were then finally fitted and assembled in the US, earning them the "Made In USA" label roll pressed into the frame.

Dan Wesson assembled the first pistols, with Magnum Research later finishing the majority of them. The Dan Wesson versions have the serial number prefix of HP and the Magnum Research versions are marked HPM. Both of my current Dalys share the HPM prefix and interestingly, though bought years and locations apart, both serial numbers are with 70 digits of each other. I have previously owned Charles Daly, Belgian, Hungarian FEG, Argentinian and Canadian Hi Powers and must say that my Charles Dalys have been the equal of any of them.

The Charles Daly clones are good in my experience. I had one of the HPM versions also. Probably should have kept it. Nice find haven't seen one in quite some time now.
The Charles Dalys don't have the gorgeous deep blue finish of the Belgian products, but they are still attractive. I was having a conversation about these with HootG (another Hi Power collector) the other day and explained that my criterion was purely functionality. The Dalys have always worked flawlessly for me and that's my bottom line.

Pristine firearms always give me pause: If they're too pretty you're afraid to take them into the bush or even to the range and actually use them. I don't buy mint state collectible guns. Even with firearms that I see as an investment, I still want to be able to take them out and stretch their legs!

I look at the Charles Daly Hi Powers more or less like I look at the Philippine Armscor-produced 1911s: You know you're going to get a solid, working firearm at a good price.
