I'm in Jackson County (Ocean Springs). I'm trying to get a course for my 10 year old son. We'd like to go nutria hunting and hog hunting soon.

I know we can do the online course but the test must be taken at a testing site. The closest one is in McComb, 2-3 hours from me.

any help is greatly appreciated,

Chris

Hmmm. Never heard of anybody doing this, but here is an online thing that claims to meet Mississippi Hunter Safety Training requirements:

Anyone ever tried it?

If it works, it's convenient (do it any time and without leaving home.)

Oops. Better read this first:

Mississippi Hunter Education Internet Course

Below are links to the only three internet courses approved by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks for Hunter Education certification. Once the student completes the internet course and passes the on-line test, an internet certificate must be printed and filled out. This completed certificate will allow the student access to the final three (3) hours of a predetermined classroom course to complete their certification. Proper ID must be presented before a student will be allowed to enter the classroom portion of the certification.

Once the internet course is passed and the internet certification certificate is printed and completed, using the map below, contact the Hunter Ed Coordinator at the district office that covers your county. The coordinator will arrange for admission to a classroom course for the final three hours and completion of the student certification.

The classroom portion must be completed for a student to be certified and only the District Coordinator can arrange admission to the final three (3) hour classroom part that completes the certification.

I just got off the phone with the MDWFP, Law Enforcement division. If the youth is less than 16 and will be hunting with a licensed adult, then there is no need for a license or a safety course. If the youth is between 12-16 and wants to hunt alone, s/he needs to take the course and get a youth exempt license. If the youth is older than 16, hunting with or without and adunlt hunting partner, s/he needs to complete the safety course and get the license.

Yeah. It worked out great with my schedule at the time! It was hard for me to get around at the time because I was recovering from my knee/leg surgery to repair my shattered(in 4 places) tibia in my right leg. so I just took it over a few week period, a section/test at a time as I had a few minutes...wouldn't have taken 4 or 5 hours tops(I'm kinda slow when it comes to reading stuff that is basically like a text book), if I'd ever sat down one day and just pounded away at it.

After I finished I printed off what I needed, called msdwfp and rode out to that station near the Rez(someone please speak up with the name), and took the last test there and that took all of 30 minutes.

I didn't want to get stuck going to a class and sittin next to a ton of people I didn't know(was more reserved at the time), and when I went to take the final test I was the only one in the room...all I had to do was watch a short video and do a short test....was nothing to it! That was probably spring of 08, because I got it just to go on a bear hunt in Canada that summer
