About to finish my AR but ran into a little problem. I had bought a Magpul handguard some years ago but I am not puttng an A2 front sight on the barrel. This means there is no ring to hold the front of the handguard is place. Do I have to install a free float handguard now? I am an AR newbie and this is one of my areas of ignorance with my first build.

I think if you’re not putting an A2 front sight, you will have to do a free float hand guard which will probably mean you you’ll have a o replace the barrel nut.

I have not installed the barrel yet so I can change the barrel nut. The A2 front sight is the only one I have found with a retaining ring.

Can't use the magpul without the a2 sight base. You could just cut the sight off if didn't want it. Or else you'll have to get a free float tube

Thanks onlymaroonmatters! That's what I have been finding out. I also have a standard delta ring barrel nut which won't work with a free Float. My barrel is on order and should be here in a week. I'll then have to find a handguard and barrel nut that will work with it. Kinda bums me out since I liked the Magpul MOE in fde.

Sounds like what you need it an AR15 M4 triangular handguard cap.

or if out this one

These can be used with other gas block besides the A2 front sight/gas block. I believe the Magpul handguards require the A2 triangular handguard cap. I have seen these used with this type of gas block and flip up front sights.

I have even seen this type of end cap used with a low profile gas block on budget uppers.

My research came up with the same end cap that Tim18wheels is suggesting. I thought it was integral to the A2 sight. This is like working on a motorcycle without a manual! My barrel should be here in about a week so I'll measure to see what will work. I do believe now that it will accept my Magpul handguard unless it is too long. If so I'll buy the midlength one. In my research I found out my 18" barrel is midlength and I bought a rile length one. Yea, I probably need a shorter one but that's easily correctable. Thanks for all the help guys, Lord knows I need it!

@Driveshaft The length for Magpul MOE hand guards you need are as follows: 12.6 inches for rifle length, 9.2 inches for mid-length, and 6.6 inches for carbine.

I did a little more research myself. Come to find out the Magpul MOE hand guards can be used with a triangular or round handguard cap.

The Magpul SL (slime) MOE hand guards need the round handguard cap.

There are a couple companies out there who make free float rails that uses a standard barrel nut. Centurion arms and Midwest industries come to mind. Midwest will be less expensive than centurion but still quality. You need to dremel off your d ring, but it's easy to do and there are plenty of walk through videos on YouTube.

Thanks for the info guys! I got my barrel in Thursday and man are those stainless steel barrels pretty! I put the barrel on, hand tightened the barrel nut and measured. I ordered the gas tube length I need and a handguard cap. Once I install the barrel and gas system parts I will order the handguard in the right length. Yea, the one I bought is too long. It's rifle length and I need mid-length. I like the free floats but that Magpul has a great feel and look.
