Are whole home generators impractical for this area?
I endured Katrina like most of you and after 10 days without power I started looking into the quieter home generators. I noticed how gas was only available to LEO, First Responders and Medical Support Staff. Next I pondered sustaining gas generators with such a high cost to power the homes refrigeration and AC. I then also noticed how police reports detail the theft of portable generators on a semi-frequent basis. Locals have commented that such events are so rare as to nullify justification for spending on a bigger house generator. My thoughts initially was to get one that powered the whole house and that ran on Propane or Natural Gas. Those prices seemed more stable than petrol and I already had a 500 gallon tank for my water heater, stove, and fireplace. Why not use that for a generator. Yes the cost would be astronomical, perhaps in the $5-8K but there are enough brown and black outs locally each year that keeps me wondering about the practicality? What say you???
