This article was thetipping point in a friends decision to buy a 300 Win Mag instead of a 35 Whelan.I'd love to see a good article detaling the differences between the 358 Win and the 338 Federal. I like the short actions and am trying to decide which would be my best choice.

That is the article that whet my appetite. I shoot a Kimber 84 in 308. If they would build me one in 358 Win it would be on order tomorrow. What they do offer is the 338 Federal. There lies my dilemma. I've been bouncing those two around but I can't find a good comparative article on the two.

When it comes to a pure thumper the 338Fed does not hold a candle to the 358Win. I can drive a 250gr Partition at 2394-2404fps, a 225gr bullet at 2556fps with my Ruger Hawkeye and I have yet to see a 338Fed that is as accurate as my 358Win. There might be one out there but if it is, let me see the target and the chorny picture. Don't let anyone tell you that there is not a noticeable difference between the two in putting game down. I have a guide friend in Canada who hunts Grizzly with a 358Win and a 250gr Partition and he will not use a 338 Fed to do that job. I know, because I just wrote him to ask him if he would and he said no way.

One day this spring I would like to ride over and visit with you. Maybe do some shooting, definately grab some lunch at Paul's Pastries. I love their Fried Softshell Crab.

As I said earlier in the post I'm shooting a Kimber 84 in 308 and if they would build me one in 358 I'd buy it. I've never owned a Ruger center-fire rifle and don't know anyone who does so the possibility of handling and maybe shooting one before buying is very very appealing.

The articles of yours I have read show you to be a fan of the Ruger bolt guns so being able to pick your brain a bit might help me decide to buy one in 358. Either way it is always good to make new contacts and put faces with forum names.
