Over in Baton Rouge four churches will be offering gas cards to anyone who turns in a handgun or assault weapon.

It is in a partnership with Circle K Stores Inc., whatever that is.

The event will be held Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or when the $40,000 allocated to gun buybacks runs out, whichever happens first.

No questions will be asked and no IDs will be checked. Gas cards will range from $50 to $200, depending on the type of weapon turned over. Assault-style rifle exchanges will get $200 gas cards, for example.

Wish it was in Mississippi. I've always wanted to stand out front and offer more (and real cash) for the good stuff.

As editorial cartoonist for the Clarion Ledger, Marshal Ramsey, left the USS Kidd with his son a few weeks ago his A/C quit then the engine ran hot. Some random shot hit his radiator, a .25 ACP

I wish I could go there too and buy some! I also wish I had some junk handguns I could turn in for the gas cards!

Yeah, I'm like the other guys, Set up across the street with a big "More for Guns" banner. And you know some of them old Deacons will be hand pickin' some for themselves.

Article did not say what they would do with the guns. The local police are behind the effort because the local police have been taking heat for not doing enough to control crime in the city.

So...getting folks to turn in old unwanted guns is supposed to lower the crime rate??? Interesting theory. I guess they think gang bangers will be lined up to turn in their Glocks.

Yes, I bet the good stuff (Colts, Glocks, S&Ws, etc.) gets handed to some of the favorite folks around town.

I'm sure the police would find some BS excuse to lock you up for a few hours if you tried to out bid the gun grabbers. Still, I'm temped to ride down there with a suite case full of twenty dollar bills and give it a try. Who's in?

Unless you have a Louisiana FFL dealer standing next to you that can ship it to your Mississippi FFL, you are SOL on handguns and giving the money to your Louisiana resident buddy will get you nailed as a straw purchaser for sure! Try a few years, not hours!

Rifles may be okay, it's been awhile since I read the regs. Be advised they will be looking for a reason to lock up anyone who messes up their feel good photo op.

Yep.

For instance, if you unknowingly bought a stolen long gun, they might be able to accuse you of possession of a stolen gun---never mind they say that they aren't worried about doing the exact same thing.

Best to just leave them alone and let them get their photo op.

So they have $40,000 to spend on junk guns? Let me get some opinions from y'all. I'm not trying to be funny here, I truly wonder which would be more effective. Here goes:
$40,000 spent on their present endeavor.

Or

$40,000 spent helping arm and properly train the church members.

My take is offering the gas cards for guns is a huge failure. It's only a "feel good" effort. I agree they are trying to do something to help but how much is it really going to help?
However, they could help stimulate the local economy by purchasing guns and ammo and paying some local firearms instructors to train "the flock" .

Yep. Liberals only operate in a "feel good" mode. It's the ONLY thing that guides them. Otherwise they would have to face facts and deal with the real world.

PS: I have always thought that government money could be spent much more wisely (if the government must give away my tax dollars) subsidizing the cost of gun safes.

Seems to me that lots more home burglaries in which guns are stolen and lots more children shooting kids would be prevented if the government stopped trying to confiscate legally owned guns and started trying to help gun owners prevent theft and misuse.
