Berdan Large Rifle Primers

I meet a guy at the range today who does some reloading of berdan primed cases ... It was an interesting conversation. I picked up 1000 large rifle berdan primers with the option of 2000 more. Yes, I am interested in trying to reload some berdan primed cases. I have saved a lot of LR berdan primed cases over the years, but how do you de-prime & re-size a berdan primed case? Is there a special de-capping die / re-sizing die you have to use? One time on E-bay I saw where this gentleman was selling a water driven devise that would de-capp berdan primed cases through the use of pressure. The guy you talked to what is his process?

-- Not pushing this site, it was just with 1st to come up in Google - think you could get it a little cheaper from other venders.

I tried the "water" route years ago and it did work; however, you need to do it in your bathing suit ... too much trouble for me.

The guy I talked with uses a modified "file" that he has sharpened. He uses the bullet seating die for the appropriate case being deprimed and screws it in upside down in the press (screws it in from the bottom of the press) ... drops the case into it, taps a hole in the spent primer with his little homemade tool, a lifts the old primer out .. he sure made it sound simple enough for me to give it a try ....

I only plan on using "brass" not steel cased and will use my standard reloading dies ...

7.62x54R boxer brass is hard to come by --- but I have some brass cased berdan primed that I am going to give it a try!!

I will take 1000. Never seen new berdan primers.............

Reloading some berdan BRASS cases is something I might try this Winter............

When you look at the business end of a boxer primer you see a three petaled anvil. Using blacksmith analogy the hammer strikes the firing pin and the priming compound is crushed and detonated by hitting the anvil.

A Berdan case has the anvil as part of the case, a little tit right in the middle with a flash hole on either side.

There is more than the diameter to consider with Berdan primers. The primers come in many diameters and thicknesses. The depth of the primer pockets are not the same between the different manufacturers and calibers. You might be buying 1000 primers that you will be just staring at on your reloading bench. It is far better to forget the Berdan primed cases unless boxer cases are not available for the caliber you want to reload.

My undersanding that these are 217 ... should fit a lot of the Chinesse and Euporean stuff out there ...
