Why is it that every picture I see of Bergdahl he is still wearing rank? Shouldn't he have been an E-nothing by now?
As I understand it, Bergdahl was promoted from PFC to SGT "while held in captivity" by the Taliban/Haqqani network.

At his sentencing on Oct 23 I expect that he will become an E-nothing (E-1) ... and, with any luck and justice, doing the long course at Fort Leavenworth!

What I don't know is whether he'll be required to pay back his E-5 pay and allowances for all that time in captivity, and for the three+ years since his ransom for the Taliban 5. My guess is that he won't be required to do so.

Did a month long job there while we were doing a big job at Whiteman AFB in Knobnoster, MO. Ft. Leavenworth was a distant second to the most depressing, dreary, life sucking place I have ever been, right behind Auschwitz. I'm not saying at all that a U.S. military prison is on the same level as a nazi death camp, but I got nearly the same feeling at Leavenworth. The whole crew felt the same way, it just sucked to be there working. Its not a happy place, even if you are walking around free. IMO from a month of coming and going freely on the grounds, I would rather be shot than do time there. Hope Beau enjoys his stay as much as I did

Promoted while absent is a new one to me. Plus, bypassed Corp / Spec?

I've had rank stripped from me by Top (1st Sgt) when picked up from stockade for fighting, and it stuck.

Why is this POS still a Sgt when he has already shown his cowardice? I feel it is an insult to every E2,3 & 4 who has earned their stripes.

I guess the Army has changed a great deal since I got out in 91

Even worse, he was in line for another promotion -- to staff sergeant -- but that seems to have been Army promotion policy, since he was not classified as either AWOL, DFR or a deserter.

Per Newsmax:

"U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl, who was captured by the Taliban in 2009 and promoted twice — to Army specialist in 2010 and to sergeant in 2011 — during his five years in captivity is reportedly in line for another promotion.

On Monday, CNN's Barbara Starr tweeted that the 28-year-old was never classified as a deserter and is scheduled to be promoted again. "Army first needs to hear from him directly what happened," Starr wrote.

According to the Army's official website, the rank up from sergeant is staff sergeant, followed by sergeant first-class."

See also" Army Regulation 600-8-19, Enlisted Promotions and Reductions, para 1-18, Soldiers Categorized as missing.

1–18. Soldiers categorized as missing

a. For the purpose of this paragraph, a Soldier who is declared missing is categorized as beleaguered, besieged, captured, detained, interned, missing or missing in action. Excluded are personnel who are in an AWOL, deserter, or dropped-from-rolls status.
b. The promotion authority for promoting Soldiers declared missing is HRC-Alexandria, HRC-St. Louis, RRC/Army Reserve General Officer Commands, or DARNG (further delegated to the State Adjutant General). The CG, HRC Alexandria maintains oversight responsibility for all Soldiers determined to meet the criteria of paragraph 1-18a..
c. The TIS and TIMIG requirements will not be waived to determine eligibility for promotion or promotion selection when Soldiers are officially declared missing. Time absent will be included in any service computation used to determine eligibility. In the event it is later determined that a Soldier died prior to an effective date of promotion, the promotion will not be revoked. (1) Once declared missing for a period of at least 60 days, Soldiers (PV1 through SGT) will be promoted through the grade of SSG upon attaining full eligibility for each grade (without waiver). The promotion authority may, as an exception to policy, authorize accelerated promotion based on chain of command input provided the Soldier was otherwise eligible. (2) Once declared missing, Soldiers (SSG through 1SG/MSG) who meet established eligibility criteria for consideration by a promotion board will be included in the zone of eligibility for that board for Regular Army and USAR Soldiers. ARNG Soldiers will continue to compete for promotion as though they were present and will be eligible for selection against valid vacancies. If not selected, all Soldiers remain eligible for continued consideration until they no longer meet the eligibility criteria.

I've no beef with Bo. Who knows what was going through his mind. I've seen plenty of guys talk the talk, and then when there's a crap storm, cry out for Momma; I reckon it ain't no fun being a POW any place anyhow.
My complaint is with the media. Trying to act like they know what war is like and court martialing him on TV, with the POTUS as 1st counsel for the defense. His peers judged him guilty, but didn't hear much from his platoon sergeant.

Bergdahl declined a jury of his peers, and asked for a trial by a military judge instead. He plead guilty to the two charges to the military judge.

Bergdahl to have U.S. Army desertion case heard by judge, not jury

Point made, however.
