Can somebody explain the Mississippi law regarding deer hunting over bait to me? I am not a hunter but know many who do. And they hunt over green patches, corn feeders, salt licks, etc.

Here is the Mississipi web site:

http://home.mdwfp.com/License/info.aspx?id=13

It says, "It is illegal to hunt or trap any wild animal or wild bird with the aid of bait."

But there are numerous opinions on what that means.

Here is one example:

http://www.ehow.co.uk/list_6658141_mississippi-hunting-deer-over-corn.html

This article is very ambiguous. It makes no sense at all to me. It says that you cannot feed them corn during hunting season---but you can feed the pelletized food during hunting season.

It says that hunters are not allowed to place feeders on their property but feeders must be at least 100 yards from property lines. Who would put a feeder on someone else's property?

it is very confusing and I don't like the feeders but at my camp if you don't have a feeder around you, you want see a single deer. I experienced that last year and now have 3 legal feeders around some of my stands. the doe and 9pt I took earlier were no where near a feeder. Starting Dec 1st you can use corn is all I know.

I wish they would just legalize it completely but they will keep it like it is for the $$$$$$$$$$

I haven't been deer hunting in over 10yrs, but when I did hunt the club I was in had wild soybeans, wild purple hull peas, and wild alfalfa in a 40yd circle around every stand on club property. :)

The use of supplemental feeding is banned on our family property...

You can kill all the deer you need without using it....

The deer would rather have something green to eat anyway....what little we got to come up in our plots is being mowed to the ground

+ 100 Neck. If you need corn to shoot a deer in MS, something is wrong. Took my 8 yr old daughter yesterday, 3 does and 1 spike grazing in pasture when we turned in off the road. 20 yds from Pinehaven. She wanted to shoot 1 out window of truck. Wouldn't let her, too easy. Went to shootin house and didn't see squat, lol.

well if all you have to hunt is pines you kinda need a little something extra for them other wise they will go someplace else. I dont support dumping piles of corn on the ground but a few feeders and good food plots is what i like to see.

That is poorly worded. Anywhere doesn't mean nowhere, they are establishing a 100 yard no feed zone around property lines is what it amounts to. The reason is simple ******* logic. Without that law my neighbor and I could set it up where we shoot across lines to each other's bait.

Personally I don't see any part of a green plot in the middle of the woods being "normal agricultural practices." I think it's bait just as much as dumping out corn.

The legislature is under pressure from rich landowners that want to set up pay hunts to allow bait. They almost made it a year or so ago, but cut out the little guy by crafting the legislation to read one could only bait if they had over a certain number of acres. I think it was >1000.
