I don't carry a knife for self defense.

I think a reasonably long knife is OK. In some States, it is not. Beware of what you carry on vacation to States like NY, MA, NJ, IL and CT. In NY, a folding knife with a blade over 2-7/8" from tip to hinge pin is a concealed weapon and they give you 2 years for carrying it. That is why this Yankee moved to Mississippi!!!!!!!!!!!

Those are not vacation destinations. If they find my body in any of the above, call the FBI. Don't worry, it will be Federal, the body was transported across state lines!

Yup.
We were on Long Island at the USMMA for "Acceptance Day" when our son went from Plebe to Midshipman. He was in summer white uniform. Went to the LIRR to take the train into the city. "Dad you think I shouldn't have brought my issue knife?"
Fortunately we know a thing or two about stashing things, hid his knife at the train station. Sure enough, between Long Island and Penn Station went through at least 4 metal detectors, not to mention all the NG and NYPD walking around with M4s...
Recovered his issue knife on the way back to the Academy.
As I've previously posted, if I never set foot in NYC again I will still die a happy man.

Wow, that’s an old thread.

Mine are tools, I carry at least two. My Lestherman Wave Plus in a pouch on my belt and a Gerber EAB razor knife in my watch pocket. Trying to be minimalist I’ve gotten to where I seldom carry a third one.

If I ever did use a knife as a weapon something has gone terribly wrong. I would either run out of ammo or have somehow been relived of my Glock(s).

I use mine every day multiple times but never for self defense.

Keep Kbar in vehicle @ all times, try keep 3-4" folder of some type for any utility/emergency use on me.
Typically would have a skinner variety in vehicle also, but, no hunting club now, so o_O

I carry every time I put my clothes on. While for second choice for self defense, I will use it if the need arises. Like a Older Harley Rider once told me, a jab and poke to the gut stops fist fights quickly.

I keep a mini Kbar in my vehicle just in case there is cheesecake. I stopped carrying a knife on me because I'm an electrician and my company has a strict NO POCKET KNIFE use policy. I carry wire strippers and cutters and usually they get used to cut the end off a zip tie at most. You can have a knife but you had best not be caught using it for work. You have to use a more dangerous "safety knife" that requires constant pressure against a switch to keep the blade exposed and causes one to use excessive pressure and accidents occur. That and when I clip a knife in my pocket the clip tends to scrape the hell out of my car's steering wheel when I get in. There are those who can't exist without a knife but I seem to never have a need for one.

Growing up in cattle & oilfield, there was always a need, even if it was only getting your beer paid for with mumblepeg toss @ the selected boot of choice:p.

I feel absolutely naked without a knife. BUT, my knife isn't for self defense. I carry a little Swiss Army knife. The most used tools on it are the toothpick and scissors. Even when I was a kid in school I carried a little knife. My teachers all knew I carried one and whenever the projector would jam I was the one who got the call to come fix it - usually requiring my knife.

Swiss army "Rambler" is your friend while traveling. Especially the bottle opener.

Yeah, the Swiss have a fondness for the corkscrews. I wouldn't be too surprised if there's a bayonet attachment corkscrew for the K31...
