Ive been giving a lot of thought lately about applying for a CCL but have been going back and fourth on what I would use for a CCW. I really like the Kimber Super Carry II, but are there some similar "cheaper" but reliable options you fellas and gals would recommend? And how do you carry yours (ankle, shoulder, inside the belt, etc)? Also what caliber do yall carry?

......and the flood gates are opened

Find a gun that you like in a caliber that you can accurately and consistently shoot. Cary it in holster that's comfortable. Otherwise you won't carry it at all and that would completely defeat the purpose

I recommend compact and subcompact Glocks with a pocket 380 for backup...but that's just my preference

I'm a faithful follower of the Brother John Browning and he designed many many handguns that will fit your need. This time of year I carry either a 1911 in 45 or a 1911 in 40 S&W. Warm weather carry is difficult in the south. When in jeans I carry some sort of 1911 in a super tuck. Shorts call for a Sig P230, J-frame lightweight and sometimes nothing at all depending on where I'm going at what I'll be doing.

I prefer my caliber to start with a 4. I carry others but the situation dictates that. I, like others, are searching for that magic one gun does everything. When I find it I'll let ya know what it is. Until then keep buying and trying like the rest of us.

How much time on the range are you investing in this?

Should be out a good bit. Hopefully twice a month even if its only for a short while to shoot a few clips.

Ummm which size Kimber? Love my kimber compact cdp2(4" slide w/ officers frame).
was looking at the 4"
So the Pro model. Kimbers are nice guns, I love mine, but like most guns they have their quirks, and you'll hear a lot of trash talk from the Wilson Combat and Nighthawk snobs, but the fact is a loyal Kimber fan will worship a Kimber the way a Glock guy will worship a Glock.

For some reviews of the super carry pro you could check out 1911forum.com, and go the the Kimber subforum.

I've only held the ultra, and I loved everything about the super platform! Just didn't see a point in the "mini bob", or the stupid serations on top of the slide, but a beautiful gun none the less, and those scale-ish serations on the sides got some great grip to em!

Well actually I guess Im a glock guy. Owned one for forever now but my father has a Kimber Raptor Pro II and thats one of the nicest guns I have ever shot.

I guess considering a smaller glock than my 22 wouldnt be a bad idea since its a platform I am used to using.

The Glock is a good choice, I have a G23 with supertuck, but I'm a little concerned about sticking a gun with no decocker or safety aiming at my boys, leg, or other vitals, even though the trigger is guarded in the holster....... I carry the SIG 238 (yes, many here will say the 380 is worthless, but much better than not having anything), it's comfortable, small, accurate, operates like a 1911. I carry and practice drawing with hammer cocked as well as down - requiring 2 thumb manipulations on draw - safety and hammer...

Do I carry a larger gun and caliber when clothing and temperatures allow? YES!! XD45

Either way a good GUN belt and holster are imperative. If you have a holster you don't have to worry about "shooting the boys off" since cocked and locked carry will be perfectly safe.

I've only carried my 1911s since I got my permit in July and I've been in situations where I've had to move around pretty quick all day and getting in and out of cars, and been to concerts where my gun was constantly getting bumped into...and NEVER have I checked or unholstered my gun to find that my safety was off.

I prefer a beltman belt and a crossbreed supertuck holster, milt sparks vm2 holster is nice as well

Jake, I have never unholstered and found a safety in the fire position either..... but I do find myself "checking" the safety on any CC gun often, just in case.... definetely agree with using only a quality holster that fits the gun and your body!

I'm OCD so I check mine pretty often, whenever I can sneak a feel(if it's my Govt model; not a problem on my Kimber though with the ambi safety). Haven't gotten a holster for my xdm yet but I wouldn't hesitate to carry it with the trigger and grip safeties! Same goes for a glock if I had one. I want to check out a m&p compact with a thumb safety sometime. They're priced better than the springers, and are just as nice, and from what I've HEARD, just as reliable. My hands are too small for a Glock though, haven't tried one with the new backstraps though.

As to the Taurus question. Not sure about the 40 but I've heard great things about the slim 9 so I'm sure the 40 would be just fine

OCD is probably very common on this site!!!!! Me too, always copping a feel on my carry piece(s)...

I have a Taurus PT111 that I like very much, it has a hard safety, and carries well - and despite some bad experiences others have had with Taurus, this one and my wife's 22mag revo are both exceptional...
