Hey guys.I am expecting my permit to arrive next week (hopefuly) and was wondering which would be best for CCW carry.
S&W 410S .40 cal. with Crimson Trace Laser grips,SW40VE,FN HP .40 cal. or S&W Model 15 (2") .38 cal.

Hello, hawkeye1142:

How much time do plan on putting in at the range? The reason I ask is because semi-autos are a little more time consuming to become proficient with. Malfunctions can also be an because of improper grip. Also, learning to clear them as well.

I carry revolvers and semis as both have their place.

I have a blog on the Clarion Ledger Outdoors website dealing with this very subject:

Hope this helps!

Also, I would carry whatever you are comfortable shooting. Just make sure you can be quick and accurate with your carry gun.

I recently picked up the Kahr PM9 (9mm) for concealed carry. The PM9 is great for me because its very small, very reliable, and a caliber that I'm used to shooting. Just make sure the gun you choose is comfortable enough that you won't ever decide not to carry it.

I carry it inside the waist band at 3 o'clock with the Minataur MTAC holster

The PM9 can be completely concealed this way even with shirts tucked in. I have to dress with khakis and button down shirt tucked in for work, so this was one of my only options. PM9 flush mag is 6+1 rounds and it comes with a spare 7 round mag that I carry in my back pocket.

Also one more important thing is the ammunition for your carry gun. I use Cor-Bon DPX Defensive ammo.

Revolver short barrels are not easy to shoot accurately. Small autos sometimes malfunction easier than their full size versions. My advice is to shoot one if you can. Lets you get a real feel for it. Make it one you have confidence in and of a size you KNOW you will always have with you.

Howard,

On the revolver comment. What distances are you speaking of? Just curious.

Mr. Cliff - Once I pass 8-10 yards, I have to really concentrate on trigger and sight picture to keep that short barrel on target. I often think that close range is all I should worry about, but then I think of a scenario, with family safety involved, where longer distances may be required.
Not to say I am an expert on the subject by any means. But years have shown me that it takes me more practice to shoot my snub noses than my small autos (kahrs) accurately. In my younger years it was much easier to shoot accurately so I am sure it is somewhat age related.

Howard

SIG P6 (P225). Plenty of polizei 'ausgeschiedene Pistolen' (surplussed guns) out there. Well-maintained, most carried a lot and fired very little - qualification maybe 16 rds per year? And SIG quality. Easy to conceal.
Bottom line will however be: What can you shoot well AND carry comfortably? May not be any of those on your proposed "A" list. If you really haven't been able to answer the first part of that question you MUST try as many as necessary until you find the one you are comfortable and good with, then use the carry comfortably criterium to weed them out. For example: I shoot better with my Para 1911, the recoil impulse seems more manageable than my SIG P6 in 9mm NATO. But for daily carry, with my w*rk dress code/habits and other requirements, the P6 is the best overall choice for me personally ; the 1911 is harder for me personally to conceal given the size and weight. I can carry the P6 all day and literally forget about it being there. And I hit with it well within my personal protection criteria at 10 yds. Beyond that I am "fighting my way to the shotgun / M4gery".
In summary: the "best" CCW gun is the one you remembered to bring with you when TSHTF.

I like the smaller autos.. I use a Kel Tec.. Not only because I can carry it everywhere comfortably, but you also have to take into consideration summer time when it gets harder to conceal a bigger gun..

What model Keltec if You don't mind me asking? I rotate my carry between my Glock26 and Keltec pf9 and sometimes Beretta 21a in 22lr.

My CCW weapons are a mixture of Glock M23, Glock M27, and S&W J Frame. Reguardless of what firearm you choose, the choice of the holster is very important. What works best for me is an inside the wasteband holster just behind my right hip, please give alot of concideration to your carry rig, once you have chosen an acurate and reliable firarm.

PS: Sorry for the spelling

For CC newbies it's best to go with a small gun, until you get really good at it. Go with the lightest, most compact of what you've got first until you learn the ropes. I guess that would be your S&W40VE.

My CC is a Glock 19.
