Well, I have been trying to decide for a few weeks now if I wanted the Springfield XD 9mm subcompact or the Glock 26. So today I went and looked at both of them and decided to go with the Glock. So the guy takes the gun and brings it over to the register and I start filling out my paperwork. So he does everything he needs to do, he put the gun in the box and hands it to me. So I left and went home. I take it out of the box and rack the slide back, take out the magazine, let the slide back down, pull the trigger and the slide pops off. So I put the slide back on, rack it again, pull the trigger and the slide falls off again. So I look at the take-down levers and I notice that it is loosely moving around and is not catching when the slide is put back on. So I had to take it back and apparently the spring or whatever is supposed keep the tension to keep the slide on was not even in the gun. Needless to say I was a little ticked off, but it was my fault because I did not check the gun at the store before I accepted it. So the store owner said he was going to have to get another one shipped in and I would have to come back in 2-3 days to pick it up. So even when you are dealing with a “top line” manufacture there could still be defects and issues right out of the box. Thank God I noticed this before I tried to shoot it or that someone that did not know much about guns did not know to check that and tried to shoot it.

Moral of the story is always check the gun at the store yourself before you accept it.

Take it easy everyone.

Well to tell you the truth, the dealer should have function checked it and found it lacking before He put it in the display case for sale.

I find it pretty hard to believe this is a new Glock, but anything is possible...

U should have bought or traded for my Glock 26...I don't ride to the coast very often however

This is really frightening - have you contacted Glock yourself? I would expect they would send out an industry safety bulletin - had you fired that pistol, the slide may well have ended up embedded in your skull. If it came new from the factory like that, I would recall the whole serial number run / batch for inspection, just from a liability and safety standpoint.

The weapon would have been safe to fire. You just would have had to walk about 30 yards down range to retrieve your slide after the first shot. Mistakes can happen even with the worlds most reliable handgun.

If the slide had ended up in his face the gun would have had much bigger problem than just a missing spring. Try pulling your slide off from the back of the frame and you'll see what I mean...can't be done...not even on a glock which I know is the wonder pistol

when the thumb safety snapped on my Kimber it lost spring tension and caused the slide to do the same thing and fall off...luckily I was on soft ground not concrete!

I'm with "Neck" on this one, sounds like someone was messing with the pistol at the shop before You purchased it. If so that's not Glocks fault. Hope You will be happy with it when You get it back.

I'm just saying if the spring was missing from the takedown latches on that Glock, maybe it is missing from several from that production run. Guess if that is the case, we'll read about it in the gun rags...
Oh yeah been a while since I've owned a Glock (17,19, and 21); there is no way for the slide to exit rearwards, you are right!

Yeah the late Jerry Dyess swore that a SIG came from the factory with a round in the chamber, and that this was the reason there was a ND which = shot him at a Great Southern Gun Show, getting them both banned for life...he swore that there had been other such episodes of guns coming from the SIG factory with a round in the chamber...regardless, we all need to check always!

Well now I am worried. Kind of bothers me that a small spring missing from the takedown lever can not only render the gun useless but possibly cause damage or injury due to the slide coming off. Anyone else had this problem or heard of this happening?
