In the spirit of the recurring theme of my posts in this forum I once again find myself knowing nothing about longarms.

I just found out that my shotgun has shipped and the notification stated that I should check the firearm before I leave the shop with it. Upon reading that I thought "thats a good idea" then I realized I dont know what to check. So what im getting at is: what should I check in order to be sure its in good order before taking it home and removing cosmoline?

geez that was a long winded question...sorry

From a recent experience check the finish. I just lost my 870 tactical for a while due to rust under the powder coat. Although I did not see this when I purchased the gun. Me I would check the mechanical operation of the slide be it pump or automatic. I would also check for scratches other visible defects. That is just my :2c:

I would have my FFL dealer go through the gun with me before we completed the paperwork. Especially if they ordered it for you, tghey need to check it before the transaction is completed and the weapon is yours!
Have the shop assemble it and function check it. Bring some snapcaps if you have them. Pay attention to functioning of the safety. Look for obvious flaws like cracked wood, rust, dents or broken parts.
