As detailed in a recent thread, Captain & I made a trip to Anniston last Saturday. My goal was a Service Grade H & R Garand to keep my SA company. I found a couple possibilities from the limited selection in that rack. I headed over to the "bargains" in the Field Grade section to see if I could find a diamond in the coal bin. Well, I got lucky! Nice wood, good metal, muzzle gauged at 1.5, throat erosion at 2. These should move it into Service Grade except...the gas cylinder was super ugly. Some moron in Greece or wherever had slathered gloss black paint on it and the front sight. A bath in some solvent and some Hi-Temp flat black spray paint will fix that quick & cheap.

I took it to the range yesterday for a brief session. Shot two clips. I think it's going to do real well. Some caveats: 1) my high power skills are very limited, so blame me for the groups, not the rifle. 2) shooting Greek surplus ammo 3) just pulled her out of the case, added a little grease, and fired away.
Two groups at 100 yds.: (where the 8th round in each clip went is unknown)
