New guy here. I have a question for you guys that have competed for a while. I have a colt combat commander is that a good gun to compete with. If so what needs to be done to improve it. I have already replaced the barral with a stainless steel match barral because the old was was pretty well shot out. I am retired military but I am just learning about civilan compitition. Thanks for your help.

Depending on what type of competition you are participating in, you may need different sights that easy to pickup quickly. A nice smooth trigger pull is always helpful. Everything after that is matter a personal preference.

Type of competition will be the key just like rdinak pointed out. Sights and trigger pull can be improved on most all commercial offerings .. I am sure that someone like Cliff will chime in here with some recommendations!!

Check out the competition section , you could use that gun in outlaw steel or IPSC . Depending on the caliber you could shoot in single stack division or limited 10 . I don't know where you live but you could come check out some matches at the range in byram . They shoot on the coast and Lousiana too.

Just learning about the different competitions. I'm retired military and have been shooting my entire life. I want to use the weapons that I already have To save on getting started.
I know where your coming from. Not trying to discourage you on the colt, but what else do you have?

As mhead stated you could shoot steel with it. All you would need is about 4-5 mags and a few mag pouches. With a holster that covers the trigger guard.

USPSA you would need the same holster,5-6 mags, enough mag pouches for the mags.
And of course eye and ear protection.

Icore is a revolver based comp if you have one of them.

Come check us out in byram.

To come and be involved with the competitions, you are required to have very little.. a holster, and spare mags (hearing and eye protrction of course). You CAN shoot ICORE as well with the 1911. Those that compete are extremely friendly and hospitiable. Very worth while to give it a try.
