I think so. I do know a couple of sheriff's dept in the Delta have Thompson 45 sub guns in the trunk of most of their patrol cars.

The only thing stopping them would be their agency policy. In 20 years of law enforcement I have never know an Officer/Agent who carried a fully-automatic weapon as their primary sidearm. Many (including me) carry a full-auto rifle, subgun, or PDW as a secondary weapon, but I have never seen it as a primary. Nothing illegal about it, though.

Yes, they can.
My AC-556 was bought from a MSHP.
On his paperwork it is registered "for use in my duties as a law enforcement officer"
It was his trunk gun. It looked like it too.. Ruger's bluing does not like humid weather and automobile storage.
I had to have it refinished.

Like the gonzo said I would want one as a secondary gun, but as your primary sidearm I would think it would be crazy. Way too much spray and pray for a crowded area for an 18. Now an MP5 is pretty precise but you cant carry it on your side too easy.

My next door neighbor growing up was a State Trooper, guess he would be about 80 now, I remember him having a Thompson in his trunk of his patrol car back in the 70's.
