Well you learn something new everyday. Did a little research and found that the French purchased a sizable quanity of M1917 bayos from the US after WWII and cut them down for fighting knives. Looks like you have one of them ... correct down to the scabbard. Here is a link to someone selling one ... go down and look under France ..

Cap't, first post I seen with "France" and "Fighting" both in it.
If you check around on the sites that are selling them, they all seem to be unused and in mint condition -- that should tell ya something!!

I have 3 uncut 1917s - 2 Remingtons and 1 Winchester ..

Remington: The right ricasso is marked with the Ordnance Shell and Flame over U.S. (the Ordnance property mark), the eagle head over 14 or 11 mark of the individual inspector responsible for the final acceptance of the bayonet, and an X. The X was originally a British mark, used to designate the convex side after flex/bend testing.

great photos alas my camera isn't that good. I have been collecting militaria for over 30 years and never have even heard of the cut downs, (maybe I've led a sheltered life) not enough Gunshows.
