If you need / want an extra barrel for your Garand, now is the time to get it from CMP -- Also, starting on the 29th, they will release WWII Era Garand Bayonets at an excellent price!! Where is the announcement ...

WWII ERA BAYONETS. Sometime mid-morning on 29 Nov, 2010, the CMP eStore will list all our WWII era M1 model (10") bayonets for sale. The listing will include M1 and shortened M1905 series models. These bayonets will also be available at the CMP North and South stores beginning 1 Dec 2010. $65 per bayonet w/scabbard with FREE S&H if ordered in 2010. Please see the M1 Garand page http://www.thecmp.org/m1garand.htm for descriptions and pricing.

NEW IN WRAP SPRINGFIELD ARMORY BARRELS. Wrapped in cheesecloth and covered in preservative are now available for purchase. The few we have unwrapped and inspected are short-chambered and required reaming to headspace. Manufacture dates range from 1952 – 1955. Barrels are sold in the wrap, so we will not be able to select by the date of manufacture. See the “barrel” tab on the CMP eStore for details. Price for these barrels is $125 if ordered in 2010. https://estore.odcmp.com/Store/login/login.aspx. Item number is PS01.

What is the difference between the two bayonets?
OK - CMP has 3 types of Garand bayo now available:

M5A1: The M5 bayo was adopted around 1953 and the M5A1 in 1956.

M1 (Modified): Original WWII era/type bayo originally made with a 16" inch blade. Around 1943, the Army decided that 16" was too long and they were sent back to the factories and shortened to 10".

M1: These were produced from 1943 forward with a 10" blade. The M1 and M1 Modified are the same with the exception of the M1 Modified started out with a 16" blade which was later cut down.

Depends on what you are looking for:

M1 Garand produced after 1953 would probably would have been issued with the M5 or M5A1 - Of course, the later produced Garands could have used the older M1 or M1 Modified if that was what was available.

Either the M1 or M1 Modified would be appropriate for a Garand produced prior to 1953.

For collector value and best buy for the $$s, I would go with the M1 or M1 Modified. All the M1 Modified bayo WILL BE dated and have either 1942 or 1943 stamped on them --- unless they were produced by Rock Island or Springfield and the dates can range from the early 1900s to around 1928 .... The RIAs and SAs were produced with 16" inch blades for the M1903 rifle. Most all were later cut down to 10" in and after 1943. The Army did not want to have to change bayo when they went from the M1903 rifle to the Garand and designed the Garand to accept the M1903 rifle bayo. So you could get a M1 Modified RIA or SA and could assume it was used during WWI, WWII, Korea - and all the other little conflicts in between!!

Thankfully I'll be in the office tomorrow instead of field work so I'll be one of those on the first pounce! I'll be ordering an RIA cutdown because I already have a Utica Cutlery M1. There are two kinds of 1905 bayonets, the "model of 1905" made by Rock Island and Springfield from 1905 to about 1930 and the very early WWII M1905 by commercial contractors which were subsequently cut down.

Trivia tidbit, the Army found some soldiers that were highly skilled at bayonet fighting (good luck doing that now!) and tested them to determine the optimum length of a fighting bayonet. The result was an 8" blade in the hands of a skilled soldier was the best. 10" was selected because ordinance decided soldiers would be more confident with a bigger unit! (Aerosmith's 'Big 10 inch' is playing in my head)

The Model of 1905's produced by Springfield and Rock Island had superior fit and blued finish, the M1905's, M1's, etc. were parkerized and cruder by comparision. Perhaps my Rock Island will have stuck a Hun and a Nazi. I'm really praying for a Bowie point, that would be cool!

This has been an excruciating process taking hours and I'm still trying to checkout. The E-Store has the worst software ever. I wish it worked as well as Amazon.
Man, is that an understatement ... logged on this morning around 7:30am waiting for the bayos to hit the estore ... did not show up until around 12:45 or so ... made my selections and tried to pay via CC time after time, and after time, and after time, etc, etc, etc, -- finally got processed!! Looks like I was one of the lucky ones -- actually got the two that are now listed as sold out ....

Went back in a short time ago to pick-up another and now it seems the server is down!!

BTW: read your post on the CMP Forum - hope you get what you are wanting!! If I can help in any way, let me know ...

Even though Orest said it may take days for them to repair the system, I figured what the heck and my order went through! No more Oneida's so I bought a cut down RIA.
I got through with 3 yesterday afternoon; however, thought I would try and pickup a PAL and have not been able to get it to go through. I already have the PAL but 1 is chromed and two are gold/copper plated - do not have one with the as issued finish on it. Guess I will try again later as this should not be one that is highly sought after .... I am somewhat surprised that the RIAs and SAs are not gone yet ... they are the ones with the real history behind them!!
