Do we have any handgun hunters here? I've been thinking of deer hunting with a handgun (357 mag) to be exact. Does anyone have any advice regarding that caliber being used on white tails inside of 50 yrds?

I have been trying to get into this my self. I try most days to carry both my hand gun and long gun. On the days I actually gave my hand gun on my never got one in close enough. I find that I like to pace out from my stand so I have a good idea of what range I am shooting at. I have a friend who has gotten several deer with a 357 and even with a good shot through the vitals they do run a bit farther than with a long gun. What are you using? I use a Ruger Black Hawk. Good luck and if you get one I would love some photos. :gun2:

I'm currently without an adequate tool for the job. However, Ironworker and I have a pending trade in which I would end up with a Taurus 689. At one time I had a Super Blackhawk in 44mag and traded it for something. That's one of the guns that I wish I'd held on to. The Ruger wheel guns really are top notch. I've also had a few Taurus revolvers over the years and I've been satisfied with them. The Taurus 689 should be able to get the job done just fine.

I have hunted deer with both a super redhawk 44 and a freedom arms 454casull. Killed a doe at about 60 yards w/ the casull. I think the 357 would be just fine for deer. We use them a lot for hog hunting and with good placement it will flatten a hog which is think is much tougher to anchor than a deer. Invest in a good range finder and know your yardage (kinda like with bowhunting) it will make a big difference.

I do a little hunting with my .454 SRH, took this little buck a few years ago at around 40 yards. Got him with a 300 grain soft point loaded with a healthy charge of 2400. I know, I know! It's a tiny little thing and would have never shot him with a long gun, I just had to try the .454 out! I like to hunt with a handgun early or pre-rut then it's 45-70 time!

I went hunting during gun season with my compound bow and my 1911 (the RIA). About dawn, I had a 1 1/2 year old (or so) buck come by my stand at maybe 5-7 yards max. He was an 8 point, and I considered which tool to properly ventilate him with for a few seconds, then let him walk to grow up. I plan to carry again this year when it's gun season, and if I get one close enough, will take a shot.

My deer pistol is 375jdj 15inch encore shooting a 260gr accubond. I think someone mentioned shooting a 30-06 encore pistol sounded like fun??? i have a 280jdj and 30-06 barrel for mine and lets just say they rarely gets used. I know alot of people shoot the 500 and think its the mother load as far as painful recoil but the recoil from either the 280 or 06 is sharp and painfull vs the heavy kick from the 500. If i ever get some spare $$$ again i want to have them threaded for muzzle breaks so i can atually shoot them more than twice and not be screaming in pain.

Check out http://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=103

they make some of the hardest hitting 357 bullets i know of that you can buy over the counter.

Ya'll saw my recent purchase of the scoped ruger superredhawk in 44m from 3spop - hope to drop a deer or two with it! It'd be another first for me.

Guess I'm not the only one with bad early summer deer fever....hoping its gonna be a banner year with some nice rack bucks!

Thanks for the info, guys. I picked up a Taurus 689 in 357 mag with a 6 inch barrel in a trade with Ironworker. I put about 50 rounds through it Saturday afternoon and was pleased with the accuracy. I haven't adjusted to the gun yet but I feel confident in my shot placement out to about thirty yards. There will be a 1-2x scope on it soon and I'm sure that will drastically improve my ability to hit vitals at around 50 yards.

Now, on to my next question. How do yall feel about Hornady's leverevolution bullets through a handgun? I've ground checked a lot of deer with that bullet through a 45-70 but I'm unsure about using it in a handgun with lower velocity. Should I load with leverevolution for a flatter trajectory or should a stick with a bonded bullet for greater weight retention and more potential stopping power?

Is deer season ever going to get here? I need to kill something.

ftsibley, finally shot 44M thru the gun....wow..... this thing shoots great.... very smooth......much stronger recoil with the longer bbl!

I still need more practice, but put 6 shots in a 1-1/2" group at 50 yds.... from an uncomfortable rest....but, like someone else on here said, that's within 1 MOD (deer)! Gonna set up from my shooting house window next time to get a real test....... afraid this gun will only become available when I'm no longer available....... SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET !
