My brother is looking for one. I know when I was a kid 11 or 12 the NRA used to give them for free to young hunters (Who had to have it in MD to get a license). He is looking for one for Handgun handling and safety.

Checked with them and they used to teach handgun classes years ago but no more.

A NRA Basic Pistol Course generally runs from about $50 - $200 per person, depending on the size of the class, costs for putting it on, and how much is added to the course curriculum above and beyond the actual course. For example, $50 would be a large class in a classroom/range that does not charge for the class and probably little or no ammunition provided. The upper end would be a smaller class and likely classroom/range fees or an assortment of ammunition and firearms provided for familiarization beyond the basic 8-10 hour course.

As the name implies, it is very basic and is centered around safe handling and usage, generally terminology, how they work, etc. There is very little shooting in the class. Some instructors will add to this because let's face it, that's what most folks want to do and it is a natural progression.

For local instructors, PM Cliff Cargill on the forum or contact Joe Rankin http://joerankin.com/contact/. Joe is a well known shotgun instruction but also has his NRA Certification as a Basic Pistol Instructor and I have taught a class with him.

Although not in Jackson, the Southwest Gun Club in the McComb area does a good bit of instruction at very reasonable rates. You could PM Doug Bowser here for more info. If your brother can put together several others that are interested, I don't think it would be too hard to get together a class.

I googled for classes and saw Clif Cargills website, was going to contact him tomorow. Also saw that Turcotte range was given money by the NFA last year to teach as well, was going to give them a call tomorow also.
