effective range on deer of 20 ga #3 buck 2 3/4"?

My son wants to kill a deer with his 20ga. He has #3 buckshot in 2 3/4". Ima put him on a stand where the longest shot he will have is 60 yards. But I'm wondering if that's too far? What are yalls thoughts? I'm not even sure what choke it has. Modified or full I'd imagine.

Go to the range and shoot it at 60, 50, 40, etc...... Then you'll know.

ditch the buck shot and get some hornady sst slugs.

No time to shoot. We huntin this afternoon. gonna tell him to limit his shots to 40 yards or so. Will the sst's shoot in a gun with a choke?

it will shoot but that full choke is gonna cause some issues shooting slugs

Hope your son got one Joe. Get a chance, we can see how it patterns as was mentioned. Give me a call and we can go to Magnolia to see how it does. Got a couple of 20 870 barrels we could take. Let me know. Got a 12 gauge that looks like the fella dragged it behind his truck to the deal (JK, call me and we can go out tomorrow) you could borrow.

I gave him the 30/30 to use. His sister had to go and wouldn't stop talking. Lol. We didn't see jack. But its good times anyway.

with 20ga 2-3/4" buckshot your effective range will be around 35- 40 yds

I'd think it would be how it patterns. Just shoot it and see where the groups take ya.
