Ever built anything from a parts kit (other than an AR)?

I've seen some pretty interesting parts kits pop up lately (lots of AK stuff, Galils, MP5, etc.) and was wondering if any of you had ever built anything from a parts kit. I can't help but think that these kits are the things that we'll wish we would have bought when we had a chance. I'm really interested in the Galil but wouldn't mind starting out on a cheap AK kit. Any of you tried building one?

Also wondering if any gunsmiths around here would assemble a parts kit?

I'm not really including ARs in this because I assume everyone has one at this point ha.

Sadly, you're probably right DC7!

Seems like Frodo built an AK a few years ago.

Talk to Sum Gy. I have a buddy that built quite a few from kits back in the 90's and early 2000's

You really do. It's well worth the time and miles.

FWIW, the cheap kits dried up several years ago. There are still some out there, but you won’t be saving anything like you would have 5-10 years ago. Just the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

It's not a kit but I'm putting a Garand together.
After putting an AR together and looking at a
Garand barreled receiver with a shot-out barrel,
I decided it couldn't be that hard. Had the barrel
changed and started getting parts. Hardest thing
right now is finding the time to prepare the stock.

Never built an AK, but I've put a few FAL's together.

I have put about enough parts in some older neglected guns to have had a parts kit.
If that is what you want, just make sure that you have patience. You will gain pride and experience. I have rebuilt Marlin, Winchester, and Mossberg, and Ruger 10/22s.
Many times I bought new parts but I have bought a parts gun cheap and from two made a decent gun. Good luck.

A couple CVA BP kit guns, many years ago. Pretty simple.
FALS are the parts kits I was thinking of when I mentioned the kits that I wished I would have bought when I had a chance.
I wasn't around for the $99 kits and the $175 receivers, but did get in on $200 kits and $250 receivers. Can't touch that now days. I have tools and some parts left over, but I lost interest and quit building FAL's a few years ago. The 300 blackout bug bit, and that was the end of my FAL building.

If anyone wants to build an FAL, I'd be happy to help. I don't have any receivers though.

Considering the cost of receivers and kits, it's hard to turn down the DSA $1000 factory FAL's rather than building.

The Holy Grail of FAL kits is probably the Austrian STG58 kits back before the ATF barrel ban. Lot of folks use DSA or Coonan receivers.

In the AK world, things like M72B1 kits still show up for sale once in a while (Sarco last Fall for ~$209, drenched in cosmoline, but you have to provide the barrel and the receiver, both of which are made in the US). Places like Atlantic buy up the rarer kits and contract the builds out, then sell them, for things like the Romanian AIM-74s. Classic, of all places, apparently had a small number of M72AB1's built by JRA, which is an underfolding RPK with a detachable bipod. Not for everyone, but a fairly unusual variation. Still see a fair amount of Romanian parts kits for sale (minus receiver and original barrel). Apex has a lot of kits usually:

I still get depressed when I look at the brand new Bulgarian AK-74 (now parts kit) that I have that they demilled with a bandsaw and dumped in a box. It looks to have gone from the assembly line to the bandsaw, maybe with a short stop in an arsenal.
