Okay, still waiting on CMP to ship the rifle. Scope is in, rings in the mail. Picked up
my Wolf Match extra from 360glitch At Big Daddy's today (nice guy, by the way).

Only thing left is deciding if I want to use a rest (caldwell Rock BR) or a Bi Pod (Harris SLM 9"-13").
I don't own either, and there's not a significant price difference. I think the rest will be more versatile in the long run, but I really want to get the one that will be the best for this type of shooting with this rifle. Very new at this, and I'm thinking the BiPod might be a little simpler, less of a learning curve. Don't really know.

Please enlighten me.

With a rimfire I don't beleive you are at a disadvantage with a bipod and a rear bag because of the no recoil that you have to fight with a highpower cartridge. I have competed with both and the technique is different for each. The bipod you set the leg lengths close and make the final elevation adjustments by sliding the rear bag up and down the sloaped bottom edge of the rear stock and fine adjustments by squeezing the bag with the free hand. Generally preloading the bipod by leaning into helps steady it. With a rest the rifle lays in the rear rest and all elevation adjustments are made with the rest's mariner wheel for course adjustments and then use the back leg screw for fine adjustments for elevations. You do not lean into the rifle but fire with a loose shoulder and let the rifle free recoil. There is probably less of a learning curve with a rest but once you get the technique with a bipod you can be competitive. Jimbo300 shoots full size F-Class with a bipod and does very good in open class.

The Kimber has a rail....so no sling swivels to attach a harris bipod to...although you could add some easy enough...Harris Bi-pod's are a lot cheaper than a nice sturdy adjustable Sinclair rest with all the do-dads...good news...22 has no recoil so it will be a lot easier to get away with using just a bi-pod...on the larger centerfire rifles...its no contest as to which one is better

You can go cheap, mid-range or whole hog...depends on your budget...

A nice sinclair benchrest costs way more than the Kimber..a moderately priced Sinclair is about $300 + high end $700...you need a front bag to go on the rest and a rear bag as well...good news is when you decide to come try "real" F class you'll be all set to go on your accessories...Rests put you in Open Class...

F-TR shooters go the bi-pod route

For what we are doing here...its personal preference...I'd say bring what you got...see what others use...try em out...but there's no need to go wild on this just yet....

Hope some of this helps

some of you F class 22 shooters are gonna have to strap it on and come shoot them BIG GUNS....You know you will.....its just like crack...one hit and you are hooked :p

Shoe
I got a Caldwell and it comes set up to add a provided extension to add a pistol rest. Just an extra to think about if you're sighting a pistol. I got rest, a scope, matt, picking up my ammo from Glitch and got scope mounts on the way. No rifle. Recon I can throw a rock 300'?

I used one of those plastic front rest and a rear sandbag in the first match and it was OK. Got one of the Caldwell BR front rest and it SUCKS ... not worth the $$s IMHO. I am going to try to make it work just because I invested $150 in it!!

I am sorta like SGF - just something to steady the rifle with that will hold a decent sight picture will work .... Of course, we are not setting any shooting records here!!

Three responses, three different ideas. Yikes. I do have one of the cheapie plastic Caldwell's, may just go with that this time. Going to swing by Magnolia for a short while this AM, take that Rock BR with you Capt., I'd like to see it. All this sittin' on a fence is hard on my scrawny butt!

I would suggest Just holding off for now --- and see a couple different set-ups ... what is good for me may not suit you ... Will bring the Caldwell ..

Notice Captain's avatar....... He is shooting off a SANDBAG....... :)

Shoe (and others), with my rest setup I used the rear bag for fine tuning my shots (squeeze the bag). Like Captain stated, use what you have to start with. Just PRACTICE with what you have.......

Captain might have made a $150 mistake with that new rest. If you later find you want to jump into this type of shooting more, then research the "better" equipment. For now, run "cheap" like me.... :)

I believe I was the one who suggested... "run what you brung"

:p

Shoe just go shoot what you got and see what others have...

I have a green Caldwell bag for sighting in deer rifles...but it sucks for what we are doing here....

I see Grafs has some el cheapo rests on sale right now

its one those things you just gotta tinker with...for me...kinda like a holster...it takes a while to find something that's just right...

main thing is you wanna be able to get it high enough to stay on target without a lot of fighting to keep it there...since there's no recoil...its not as hard to do

you can shoot off a 12 pack of Miller Light if it works for ya....

I sorta like what subgunfan said. When I started F-Class I went with what I had. I bought a gun because I didn't have anything appropriate for 600 yds. Other than that I used a rest that I had already bought and a rear bag that I'd owned for 15 years. I went, made mistakes, watched, asked questions, watched, listened, watched, learned who to watch, and I'm still a watching em. This is really a good group of folks. They have answered my questions, helped when I asked and offered help when I didn't ask.
This is a whole lot of fun. Whether .22 at 100 yards or 6.5X47 at 600 yards. F-Class is a real hoot. Just come, be safe, shoot and have a good time
