I'm just getting started, and don't know about power factor. I have a Glock 34, and do not reload. I have been using Remington UMC 115gr. Is this going to make it when I finally show up out at Magnolia? From the post it looks like it is 131, and isn't the minimum for "minor power factor" 125? Should be OK, right? Thanks,

If you shoot Production then all scoring is based on Minor power factor, so anything over 125 is legal.

To figure Power Factor:

(Weight of Bullet in grains X Speed in Feet Per Second)/ 1,000

As a cavat, the numbers in the list above will be different in your gun as barrel length, rifling and other factors effect the bullet's FPS.

Please do come out to Magnolia, new shooters are definitely welcomed.

I didn't see it on the list, but Hornady makes Steel Match ammo for 9mm, 40 and other calibers that is designed to meet Minor PF in 9mm and Major PF in 40 and above. It's a bit pricey, but if you don't reload and want match grade ammo that will meet PF for a big match, not a bad way to go.

JD's post is right on. You will most likely be fine with the UMC 115 in your 34, so come on out. Rounds are not checked at local matches, but of course you want to be legal anyway. A 115 needs a minimum of about 1087 fps average to make 125 PF, but really somewhere around 1130 or faster would be better to compensate for variation in individual rounds, chronographs, atmospheric conditions, etc.

If you were considering shooting a major match (like a State Championship, Regional, Nationals, etc), you'd want to chronograph to make sure you were making enough of a cushion above the required power factor to not have any surprises. Let us know if we can be of any help or answer any questions.

I mean what ammo is allowed. Most seem to exceed power factor.
Exceeding power factor just means it's over the 165 needed to make major, it does not mean it's against the rules to use it. Here is the only ammo not allowed.

  • 5.5.3 Metal piercing, incendiary and/or tracer ammunition is prohibited at USPSA matches (see Rule 10.5.15)
  • 10.5.15 Using metal piercing, incendiary and/or tracer ammunition (see Rule 5.5.3), and/or using any ammunition which has been deemed unsafe by a Range Official (see Rule 5.5.5).
  • 10.5.15.1 Ammunition declared unsafe by a Range Official due to multiple squibs, shall not subject the competitor to disqualification.
