243 Winchester....Had a long standing love affair with this round. This my trusty old Model 7 Remington....Had gotten beat up pretty bad over the years, so I Duracoated it last fall....Got several other rifles, but this one is my all time favorite. It's a real killer.

Also really becoming a fan of my 444 Handi-rifle....

Over the years, I've killed deer with a 270, 243, 30-06, 223, 45/70, and a 12guage. By far, my favorite is the NEF Handi 45/70. It speaks with the most authority on deer out to 150 yds. With shot placement in the boiler room with a 300gr rem hollow point, 99% fall in their tracks.

Well I would have to say my 308s but I do love my 7mag also. It just depends on the place I am hunting.I also have the old 3006 but hate the recoil but it will do the job
.30-06 recoil MORE than 7mm Mag? Just wondering, as I never shot the 7. I DID shoot 8mm Mag., though, and can tell you, it HURTS!

If I still had the old Winchester 94, .30-30, my Dad got me when I was 14, it would sure be my favorite deer rifle.

I'm a 7mm man. Anyone have accuracy problems with their 300 winmag?
No problems with my 300 Win Mag. It shoots 1/2 inch groups of 165 grain Sierra Gamekings loaded with IMR 4350. I dropped two really nice bucks in their tracks with this load this past hunting season.

I bought a 300 RUM Remington 700 with intentions of using the action to build a 257 STW. I just tried a load of 180 Accubonds with IMR 4350 that believe it or not shot a 1/4" group. Needless to say, the 300 RUM barrel will stay put.

I have several. My Win Model 70 is a pre-war and in.270 WCF. It still shoots 5/8" 10 shot groups off the bags at 100 yards with a variety of bullet weighst from 90 gr to 150 gr.

Another is a pre-war Yugoslavian Mauser 98/24, in .243 Winchester, with a 25" MacMillian barrel and a Bishop stock. Assembled it ourselves. It shoots MOA but only with bullets that are 90 gr or heavier and slow burning powder such as IMR 4831.

Befroe my Dad died and he left me the .270 Model 70, I hunted with a Winchester Model 1894 Eastern Carbine in .30 WCF. It was made in 1919 and has a great bore. I mounted a Marbles tang sight with windage and the accuracy level is under 3" at 100 yards.

These days, I use the .243 more than any other rifle. I do not want to take the chance of damaging either of the Winchester rifles in the woods.

I've not been deer hunting all that long (say maybe 8 years regularly), but what I've always hunted with through that time is 7mm Rem. Mag. in a Ruger M-77 MkII.

At the time I bought it I did so because it was one of three that a dealer had in left-handed, and the other two (.270 and .300 Win. Mag.) didn't blow my skirt up. Here lately I've been thinking of getting out of the 7 mag business altogether.

My longest shot where I hunt would be maybe 300 yards (most of the deer I've killed have been between 150 and 225 yards) and that's nothing that a lighter kicking rifle like the 7mm-08 wouldn't handle just as well.

:)
