For all the participants who participated in our AR shoot at McCain last Saturday, please take a couple minutes and give us some feedback ... both Good & BAD!! We WILL do this again, and want to know what things went well and what things need our attention ...

If you do not want to post it here for some reason, please feel free to PM me or email me at [email protected] with your feedback.

PS: I already know it was HOT!! -- will plan for cooler temps next time!!

Thanks

I thought most everything went really well. The few little kinks that came up (like dealing with malfunctions on the firing line) were analyzed and addressed.

My only suggestion would be to have a designated area for tents/lounging/etc. Folks were pretty well spread-out. One of the positives of these events is the opportunity to meet each other. Socializing is easier if we're all more or less together.

I thought it went extremely well, especially for a first time. Everyone seemed to have a good time (even those shooting Tula ammo). I'm sure everyone learned a lot about what's going on and what to expect and prepare for next time. thanks again to everyone who made the arrangements and did the work.

Good suggestion on location of lounging ... will keep that in mind. Have thought about the malfunction issue ... think we will not Call a Cease Fire and have the whole line waiting .... if you have a mulfuntion you can not clear ... place the weapon on the V-Stake and wait until the firing is complete ... we will deal with malfunctions at that time.

Thanks for the feedback -- I believe many lessons learned by a lot of shooters regarding oiling/cleaning their weapons and choice of ammo -- learn before you come to the range ..

For the first time of putting something like this on... i think everything went well!

I already ordered a bunch of reloading stuff for the next time.. Not gonna be running any more that steel case stuff thru my ARs.
I can reload for half the price of that junk anyway now :D

What we shooting next??

I thought it was great and I would like to thank you and the others who orchestrated that event. Can't wait till next time. Looking forward to taking my bolt gun to the long range someday. Right now I'm buying magazines and more ammo. for the .223.

I would suggest assigning relays and firing points for all shooters at the beginning so they could have their shooters cards filled out, ammo loaded, everything together to occupy their position on the firing line immediately as soon as the line is cleared of the previous relay. If you already know ahead of time, you can be better prepared and ready to shoot. This could be done by the luck of the draw, everyones name in the pot and draw for relay and firing point.

Good ideas and suggestions ... We have already decided when we do it again, we will limit participation to no more than 50 shooters. If we do limit the number of shooters, we could actually assign everyone a permanent firing position and they could fire every other or 3rd relay if they desired. Relays actually went pretty quickly ... would provide time for filling out cards and loading magazines. Would also provide a rotation to secure Safety Coaches from -- thanks for the input!!

Some info...... and an apology.

The COF lasts 3 min 29 sec to engage 40 targets (computer run time only). Below is the time between relays that day.

1 & 2 - 11 min
2 & 3 - 30 min (changed shooters)
3 & 4 - 8 min
4 & 5 - 38 min (changed shooters)
5 & 6 - 15 min. (see my apology below)
6 & 7 - 82 min. (lunch break)
7 & 8 - 8 min
8 & 9 - 28 min (changed shooters)
9 & 10 - 9 min

I want to apologize for making the shooters in Relays 5 & 6 bake in those HOT foxholes for about an additional 7 min. Near the end of Relay 5 I had an ammo problem that jammed my gun. My stupid-ass pea-brain self was thinking "get this jammed rifle off the line" and caused the shooting to be delayed. What I should have done was just SIT THERE while Relay 6 was fired on schedule. Again, I apologize to those shooters.

Now for my General Comments....

1. I sure hope Camp McCain can get ALL 16 lines of targets working 100%. We had problems with 3 lines that I know of.

2. Shoot in cooler weather........... DUH.

3. Use same format as this time. Standard COF in foxholes first, then open/fun shooting. Except for open/fun shooting, limit the number of rounds taken to the line.

4. Yes, try to improve the Shooter Cards format. That was a PIA for me and the shooters.

5. Get more shooters to be ROs. The ROs this time worked too much.

I think it went really well overall. I agree that malfunctioning rifles should be set on the stake and only dealt with after the COF. We do need to have a better rotation for ROs since some people were an RO for too long. I would have done it more but we had more volunteers to do it than RO vests. I didn't have a problem with my Tula steel ammo, just one jam with the Monarch which was quickly resolved by Ray. Maybe we could have two ranges next time and spread out our shooters if we can get a good number and that way everyone will have plenty of time to shoot and get to do different ranges. But what we did was great and I loved the format. Maybe I need to bring a generator and fan too  .

Thanks again for getting all of this organized and put together.

P.S. We should make a safe area closer to the range so people can clean and work on their rifles in between shooting and ROing. I don't mind letting people use my cleaning kit if they forget theirs.
Yea - you are certainly correct on this one ... the location of safe area was a last minute determination and a bad decision at that .. ... a tent with tables closer to the range would have been much, much better.

Thanks for the input!

I think putting the safe area under the tower would be a good solution. Rope it off so there is only one way in. Assign an RSO to police the "Absolutely no ammo policy!" That would be a good shady spot for an RSO.
Good idea; however, it would violate range rules ... actually there is suppose to be no one under the tower (I know - I violated the rule by letting it happen!!) ... the safe area must be away from the tower and ammo building .. We did not use the Classroom (long building on left below the ammo building) ... that may be a good place!

Again, thanks for the comments ...
