Fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.
Leviticus 9:24
Who is this God we worship? How nearly do our ideas about him approximate reality?
From time to time, people in Scripture got a glimpse of God. And as at the inauguration of the tabernacle, they responded with powerful emotions such as joy and fear. No tame God here. No illusions that they could master him.
Does your worship generate a thrill in touching something of the real God — at least from time to time? Do you sometimes experience a conflict of emotions such as fear and delight? Do you find yourself moved? If spending time in the presence of God is always comfortable, never anything that would make you fall on your face in reverence, you have further to go.
As you go through the day, take with you a sense of God’s majesty, his power, his awesome presence. Fire blazes forth from the presence of the Lord. Feel the heat.
PRAYER
Great God, show me the real you …
