I have a Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag (1982 vintage) that I've been using for CAS matches. The rifle was purchased used and worked well for over a year. Recently it's been suffering from the infamous "Marlin jam" and caused me to blow two matches (grrrr).

After a lot of internet research I saw several alleged cures, but the most straightforward seemed to be to replace the shell carrier with a newer and redesigned carrier. I ordered the part from Midway (PN# 370170 031020 - which fits .44 Mag and .45 Colt) for around $75 and installed it a couple of nights ago.

I cycled around fifty rounds through it - both .44 Mag and ,44 Special - with nary a hiccup. Then I tried filling the magazine with both Special and Magnum rounds and again, it cycled flawlessly.

Did you try any of the cures from the internet? I've considered trying one of the ones described on the Marlin forum. I've got an early 1894 in .38-40 that has the problem.

No. I read several of the supposed fixes on the Marlin forum too, but my rifle didn't display a lot of the things they discussed. For example, I didn't see any wear - at all - on my old carrier. That's one of the reasons why I decided to just bite the bullet and buy the carrier from Midway.

I think repair will be my only option. I've never been able to find a replacement. I just haven't gotten around to trying it.

Thanks for posting. I am beginning a small herd of lever actions. I may need it down the road.
