how hot does .4% carbon steel have to get to be workable?

any suggestions for tools

With a small amount of work a small piece of rail road track makes a decent anvil.

why are you trying to forge .4% carbon steel?, since this is in the blade section I assume you are trying to make a knife .4 carbon is not enough to make a useable blade. And temp wise it would need to be 1500 to 2000 degrees to forge. You can use Harbor Freight hammers and They have a junk anvil too I wouldn't suggest a RR anvil because their so rounded.

Tell you what before you spent a bunch of money to try and forge out a knife. Why don't you give me a shout when you can come up and play in the fire with me I'll help you make a knife out of good stuff.

i was trying my hand at a railroad spike knife.
i learned that they supposedly have around .4% carbon steel
