Found pressure ring cleaning my barrel.

A while back I posted about finding a deal on a Remington 700 in 30.06 at a pawn shop. Well I got around to cleaning it today. As I was running the patches through the barrel I felt consistent pressure all the way till about 2" from the muzzle. Than it got light than back to normal. At 1st I thought it might be just dirty but I felt it with every patch. I got it all cleaned up and looked down the barrel and sure enough about 2" from the muzzle there was a recess in the barrel. It's got rifling, not that the bullet would touch at that point.

Question is will it shoot accurately and what may have caused it? What do y'all think?

density of the metal was less in that spot. i bet if you could send a bore cam down it you will see threads are deep as heck on one side and almost non existant on the other.

its called a pressure ring when hunting in wet weather if a drop of water enters barrel then gun is shot the bullet traveling at say 2800 feet oer second meets the drop of water flows around the bullet and since water will not compress makes a perfect ring if you llook down outside of barrel you should see a buldge around outside of barrel most of the time they will not shoot to well after this happens i rebarrel on average 6 rifles because of this every march are so also have seen this happen in shotguns have a ruger 357 mag on bench now that i am replacing barrel that has compression ring

Learn something new everyday!! Thanks for the lesson!! Guess I need to put some condoms in my range bag -- maybe not, what if the wife sees 'em??

you nailed it. The outside of the barrel has a ever so slight buldge to it. I never would have guessed that a drop of water would do that.
Thanks for the reply.

Re: Found pressure ring cleaning my barrel.

He had his gunsmith friend cut and recrown the barrel. It did not like smaller 150gr. bullets he had to go with 180gr. and it tightened the group a good bit. It is a remington 742 and it is just as accurate as my 7400. I would say with handloads it will stay inside a three inch circle. That is good for an auto your bolt should do better. It just depends on how much of the barrel has to be cut off and how good the smith is. I would say consult a good smith in your area.
